Thanks for that. It probably explains why I have one noisy tappet, even when they were tight. Hopefully its a tappet which is easy to change.
Normally it is the valve stem that de-forms and or the end of the little pushrod. tappets are tough little b's

you can "polish" out the dents on the pushods with a fine shapening stone... If the valves are dented they will be difficult to get out of the head without dremelling the mushroomed area of the end of the valve stem.

If the cupping of the valve stem top is not too bad, it is possible to file it down very gently with a metal file after having applied some grease to catch any filing. Vlve clearance should be measured with the engine cold (i.e. at  least 3 h after switching off).

Thanks, all good tips. I have a spare engine that I am overhauling so I will swap the push rods one by one. I will get that little rattle.

Does anyone know where to purchase the Lancia special tool for adjusting the clearance or a replica?

The disc type with a central slot used to be sold by Omicron. Nonetheless, it is not difficult to cut a suitable-size opening in a metal strip as a homemade tool. Feeler gauges and a 10 mm ring spanner are all you will need.Other tools are useful only for some valves and not for exhaust ones as there is no room to use them (they were originally for Fiat 500). In the old days Harry used to say that even a pair of small pliers was enough to turn the tappet screws. Very important that for any adjustment, each tappet pad is precisely at the opposite position to the cam heel.
