Watching the Silverstone Classic last night and mention was made of a Ferrari 250 Berlinetta. Over the years, in very idle moments, I have pondered what the technical difference is between this and a coupe as they pretty much appear the same. The only thing I can think of is that a coupe is (literally) a cut version of a larger car and a berlinetta is a version that stands alone with no other version. Would that be right?

Hi Stanley, it is my understanding over the years working on Alfas , Ferraris etc that a Berlinetta is a small saloon, as a Berlina is a Saloon or Sedan (US) and a coupe is normally a 2 door hardtop as opposed to a Spyder ( Convertible, Cabriolet). Derived from the French word couper to cut, eg. a cut down 4 door saloon. Having said that Ferrari tend to have their own definitions which break the rules, like the F355 Berlinetta which is a 2 door sports car, the GTS being a GT Spyder and the GTB is a GT Berlinetta. Make of that what you will!
Sorry I couldn`t be more specific. John.
