Do we have to submit any new paper work to be tax exempt? I am going to be one of those who may benefit from this come April I hope, with a 1973 car (L reg).

Cant help wondering. With this rolling exemption, plus the abolition of the paper tax disc, are we heading towards a new form of road tax, generally fairer and added to the price of fuel.

yes. Believe you need to amend your registration to Historic tax class.

Section 7 of the V5C registration document gives you the opportunity to change the Tax Class. The wording is; 'The tax class shown in section 4 can only be changed when taxing. Please apply to your nearest DVLA local office' lol!

So, you need to time taxing your vehicle to coincide with the date on which it becomes tax exempt. I presume that there's nothing to stop you cancelling an unexpired tax disc and then applying for an exempt one. I suppose that you may need to Sorn between the two.

Just double checking, the 1955 B12 I am restoring no longer requires either MOT or road tax (paid for anyways), as its not on the road nor insured can I still register it for an NI age related plate, or do I need an actual insurance certificate to go with original log book only to get it registered?

I recently registered the Appia furgoncino in the UK for the first time and was issued an age related number - does it work the same way in NI ??

I wrote up what I did/needed here:

Car tax exemption update: I have obtained my free car tax for the next 12 months and assisted a fellow Fulvia driver obtain his too. This applies to 1973 cars only.

It is quite straightforward, I called the DVLA to check the requirements it is simple. You will need your V5 document, take it to you local post office, I recommend you go to a large PO, not a small local sub-branch. Take you mot and insurance and old tax disc, just in case, but you may not need them, amend the tax category on the inside left hand page to 'historic' and sign and date, hand over to the counter staff and they should issue a new tax disc as historic, nil value and send you old v5 back to the DVLA for amendment and reissue.

I did this a few weeks ago, the new V5 has not arrived, but this week I did get a reminder to purchase my new tax at £145,  some how the tax exemption policy has not rippled through the whole of car tax organisation (DVLA).  Don't pay the renewal if you have a car of 1973 vintage!

Procedure for changing DVLA details is as follows. This is for vehicles which require evidence of date of manufacture which cannot be processed at the Post Office. The taxation class can be changed at any time and existing road tax refunded after historic vehicle tax disc received.

Complete Section 7 (Changes to current vehicle) of V5 document (logbook)
Enter "HISTORIC" under Tax class

Send V5 form, COMPLETED V10 FORM FOR NEW TAX DISC, current MOT (original not copy) and evidence of  date of manufacture to DVLA Swansea SA99 1DZ.

New tax disc will be issued within 2 weeks. Original documents returned within 4 weeks

To get refund for previous road tax obtain V14 form and send to DVLA. Only complete months refunded
