Police driving course?  It seems such an obvious question, but is that because you're in the police, and a driver?

How long was the course?  Are there various levels you work through?  Do I remember correctly that there used to be "the book" that police would drive to?  Still the case?

The only police driver I could name was John Gott who rallied big Healeys on Liege Rome Liege and similar.  I thought Ant Anstead from 'for the love of cars' was a police driver but I'm not 100pct sure that was his role.

David

I work in what is now the Criminal Investigation Directorate of HMRC. I was trained as a surveillance driver, which entailed in my case a three week basic driving course then a four week advanced course (the 'full monty' blues & twos 145 mph on the A1!). I then did a two week refresher course in 2013.

The funniest tale was on the M1 in Silverstone week. We got caught in the race traffic and the instructor didn't like being late home. He put the blues on and told me to work my way through the traffic then make progress. As I got to the front of the jam an Aston Martin broke free about five cars in front of me. I accelerated after him but he was still losing me at 130 mph. Then he must have seen my lights and coasted onto the hard shoulder awaiting the seemingly inevitable loss of his licence.

We drove past with the instructor wagging his finger at him. What relief he must have felt!

I bet every time the Aston driver has told that story down the pub his mates have rolled their eyes and thought 'Yeah, right. The police are just going to wag their finger when you were doing 130!"

He was doing well more than 130, but the instructors, although they have the same exemptions under the Road Traffic Act as Police Officers, they are civilians and don't have any other Police powers, so are unable to pull drivers over.

As you say, the Aston driver must get plenty of "yes, like that really happened..." reactions, which in a way, makes it funnier still.

Not at that speed - but I had a similar moment on the A25 thinking it was me they wanted only for them to overtake and disappear on more important business.

In a way, it's more impressive policing to wag a finger than to pull him over. Having broken out into a cold sweat, seen your licence taken away and possibly your job in your imagination, the thought that you will never be that lucky again should stop most people from repeating the offence.

HMRC and I scrapped a 1300 coupe once.

Do I resign my membership now or will the boyz be round?

No, if the 'boyz' went round to everyone who'd scrapped a Beta, it would be a full time job!

Though not entirely obvious from this photo my Coupe had it's new bonnet and boot lid painted and fitted this week. Have spent all morning cleaning, fettling and replacing trim. Hopefully now ready for the LMC stand at Manchester Classic car Show.

Looking forward to seeing it at the show. I'll be creeping in on the Saturday morning! Can't make the Friday set up due to work commitments..
