Held on by suction cups apparently........perhaps some one can explain the science behind it?!

Would be a bit like my spotlamp that suction mounts to the inside of the screen - well maybe once...   I'm trying to imagine the courage to trust that with luggage on top of a nice car.

You might be able to source modern suction clamps and engineer them to it, or modern magnetic clamps.

If its anything like the one my father had which sits on four rubber cups it is held down by 2 clamps that attach to the rain gutter.  It is hanging from the ceiling in my garage\1
