DRIVER SKILLS TO BE TESTED AT ANNUAL CLASSIC CAR PICNIC

The  Letchworth Garden City Classic & Vintage Car Club Annual Transport Picnic takes place on Saturday 8th June 2013 in glorious countryside at Halls Green, near Weston, in North Hertfordshire. All car clubs and individual owners of classic, vintage, veteran or modern thoroughbred vehicles are welcome to attend and the public is invited to come and view the mouth-watering display.

While a 1950’s rock and roll band entertains, the Cream Tea tent does roaring business, and children are kept busy with bouncy castles and slides, a gentle and good-humoured driving auto-test will tax the skills of entrants. Drivers negotiate a course that tests their ability to manoeuvre their vehicle through narrow gaps and into tight spaces, all the while trying not to touch the posts and straw bales that mark the course. All of the gates and ‘garages’ are adjustable, so that vehicles of all sizes have an equal chance of winning. Points are awarded or deducted according to how accurately the driver follows the course and how well they fare with the tasks that are set on the way round. There is no timing involved and it’s usually the very slow and steady drivers who win.

Organising committee chairman David Davis said: ‘The auto-test provides great entertainment for drivers and spectators and a lot of laughs when things go wrong. Which they invariably do! We are looking forward to several hundred vehicles coming along to the Picnic and if any club would like to reserve a group space for the day they are very welcome to contact us in advance and we will make sure they can group together on the display field.’

The Picnic takes place at Fairclough Hall Farm, Halls Green, Weston, Herts, SG4 7DP. £5 per vehicle on the gate. Pedestrians £2. Gates open at 11am and the event ends at 5pm.
