I have just completed a round trip across France of some 1384 miles. In Calais I paid 1.34 euro a litre for diesel, in other words, £1.08, a saving of 33p over UK prices. Or approx, a stonking £1.45 a gallon!  Even on the autoroute I only paid 1.48 euro, still only £1.18. In Dover a litre is £1.43.9.

Always pleasant to get over to Calais and fill up for so little (seems the difference to here gets wider by the year). Never did understand why oh why there is such a big difference in pricing between the Petrol and Diesel in France and it is the other way here. Apart from taxes, is there another good reason?

A few weeks back it reached 1.48 in the supermarkets here - the highest I'd ever seen it. Then the government stepped in and it is now back to around 1.34 or 1.33 in the supermarkets. Can you imagine such quick action from the government in the UK? It wasn't even sparked off by the usual tractors on motorway protest.

Here.....petrol taxation is a revenue stream.........in France fuel is a necessity......not a luxury, plus they have a far greater/longer diesel culture than the UK

And you don't need to use so much of it because you can actually make good/fast progress on their excellent road system!
