Hi you knowledgeable lot,

My 1998 Delta HPE 2.0Turbo 16v has been off the road now for two years with various problems. I have entrusted my regular mechanic with the job of sorting the power steering and he has reported back to me today with the bad news that the steering rack itself has a 2.5" inch crack in it. A replacement rack is the only option as it's not suitable for reconditioning. Needless to say, a new one is no longer available from Fiat, therefore I am appealing to anyone here that has any idea if the same rack is used in any other Fiat group car. I know that many parts on these cars are shared with the Fiat coupe, certain Alfa's and the Dedra so hopefully the rack is too. A replacement will need to be LHD too. All ideas / suggestions welcome.

Many thanks,

Ian.

Ian,

I have checked my copy of Eper and the Rack for the 20 Turbo does show that there is only 1 fitment.

Looking at the others listed for other models there was a part subsitution and looking at those it lists Fiat Coupe, Alfa 145, 146 and 155.

I have as John Brain for an email address of a breakers in Holland we have used for some parts for my car

Hi Simon

Thank you for looking into this for me. Since posting my plea for help i too have found the ePer info and my broken rack should arrive with Tanc Barratt tomorrow (Thursday). He seems quite confident that he can make a suitable replacement up from either an early Fiat coupe rack or possibly a similar Alfa rack but wanted to see my original unit to be absolutely sure. I Will keep you posted as to the outcome. I think a list of compatible parts for our cars with other Fiat group parts should be compiled, if it doesn't already exist. I look forward to obtaining the Dutch breakers yard contact details as this could be a valuable lifeline as parts availability gets increasingly worse! I can't wait to get the car back on the road and attend a few meets. There are only a few minor jobs to do once the steering is fixed, then it's off to the test station.

Steering rack all fixed now (many thanks to HPEHF and John Brain). As soon as i get a bit of free time to sort out a few minor issues it's MOT test time and hopefully get a few miles under her belt before the winter.
