Out in my car recently (2000 Sedan with carb) and there is a bad petrol smell (with windows open). No apparent leaks, and no smell from 'under bonnet' with car stationary and engine running. Any ideas ?

fuel tank vent pipe secure, obstructed or anything been put against it that has crushed or kinked the pipe, I'm assuming same as Fulvia with it in the boot, fuel cap seal? Filler pipe to tank, any sign of petrol staining? sounds like your sucking the smell from the rear forward and with windows open you're getting the full benefit, does it smell with windows shut?

Check the rear of the car. Had the same problem on a 2000 sedan which turned out to be that the rubber pipe from the tank to the pump had perished. Had it on Modestine too when I left the fuel filler cap open! Embarrassed

Probably done this but try looking on the ground under car for signs of dripping fuel.

Thanks for the advice. I think I may have it sorted. The choke cable was caught on the underside of the air filter box. I'd recently changed the filter and probably not noticed the cable, which runs through a bracket on the underside of the casing. In effect the chocke was 'on' even though the dash light indicated that it was 'off'

Hence the smell of petrol with the windows open and the smell being sucked forward, don't think I'd have come up with that in a million years Roll Eyes
Pleased you've sorted the problem.
