Dark blue Flaminia Touring seen today leaving a petrol station in Milton Keynes probably returning from Bicester Heritage brunch though I didn't see it in my brief and very wet visit there. I waved from my Y10 but being rather steamed up I don't think they saw. (Y10 steamed up not me.)

Not exactly ‘on the road’, but in the yard of a pub off Borough High Street, central London yesterday – two Lambdas and an Ardea looking absolutely gorgeous.

Very good to see a gold Gamma Coupe (B-reg) turning off the M25 at J 31 tonight, followed it all the way to Ikea, which was where I was heading in my Alfa 159.

Gracing the roads of north London today – Fulvia S2 Berlina KPD 569K

The proud new owner of this magnificent vehicle, Simon Duval Smith called by today to show it off with a new MOT certificate freshly printed out yesterday. The car looked lovely with its understated 1970s charm, which is a bit compromised now because most people would think it was a Lada, but no matter – the Lancia stylists got there first and Ladas are now a faded memory! Lancia Blue suits this car very well, but currently the almost matt-flat finish is a bit surprising – not so much ‘stealth’ (as in the bomber) because in places it’s almost ‘Anaglypta’ in depth of texture, but I am sure Simon will soon sort this out. Anyway, in the rain it still looks glossy.

The journey north from its previous retirement home in rural Sussex was not without incident. The Sussex cobwebs were well blasted away by the time we got to Kenley, and a few drivers of moderns looked surprised to be outgunned by this elderly blue-box. The look of fear and horror on the face of the back seat passenger in the BMW at Purley was entirely misplaced. He just didn’t understand that when the rear pads had been binding on and boiling off the brake fluid it was inevitable that the following Lancia would have been unable to stop without mounting the kerb and running alongside for a bit – silly man! And it was no use shouting to him that “We have got dual circuit brakes!!!” Anyway, after a hour in the rain at the Shell garage with lots of water and steam to cool it all down, a with a few basic tools to free-off the remains of the pads, Simon had sorted it out and all was plain sailing.

I think KPD is destined for an interesting new life.

Colin

I hear rumblings of discontent and I worry that I might have unintentionally given offence – perhaps I need to correct any false impressions.

When I referred to its previous home as a ‘Sussex retirement home’, this wasn’t to suggest it was a ‘care home’. On the contrary – it was a very fine place to languish for a while in anticipation of a demanding life yet to come. It certainly wasn’t a case of being put out to grass, although the accumulated green algae (which were quite deep in some places) might have nurtured this idea.

Any allegations of hooligan driving on the A22 should be dismissed. It was a bank-holiday weekend and as everyone knows, overtaking on that road needs to be done with care. It wasn’t our fault that the Nissan left his braking so late that he locked-up – Simon knew that all he had to do in the Fulvia was keep on the gas and around it would go. And in that way it was perfectly understandable that Simon wouldn’t know that he had lost the brake pedal until we caught up with that BMW. It doesn’t say much for modern motorists that nobody tried to alert us to the flames and smoke that must have been coming off that rear wheel!

I don’t think I need say any more about the Shell garage at Kenley, but if he is looking for a good Tripadvisor rating he might do better than offer a pair of office scissors by way of tools to help get the wheel-trim off! However, the micro-waved Ginsters were a redeeming feature.

I should also say that the man in the Audi who tried to squeeze us out on the Camberwell Road should have known better than to hold a grudge all the way to Blackfriars Bridge. The fact that Simon held his cool and gave way at the last moment was much to his credit. That was what Lancia motoring is all about.

Thanks for the update Colin, I'm relieved that you made it home and that she's obtained a new MOT. I absolutely hate selling a car to someone I know, especially when it's not been used on the road for thick end of a year. I did offer up a silent prayer as you left me and had a lump in my throat at the sound of the typical Fulvia exhaust note as Simon gunned her up the drive. I was in awe of his cheerful confidence in setting off on the journey with virtually no tools, something I would never be brave enough to do.

So, having admitted my discomfort at selling to a friend (hope we still are Colin and Simon) I'm absolutely delighted that KPD has gone to someone who will love and cherish her. And, that we will all get to see her from time to time, she will always have a special place in mine and Margaret's Lancia memories bank.

How wonderful that it has an enthusiastic new home. I look forward to hearing tales of it's new lease of life. Well done for providing a good home Colin.
