Can anyone tell me if I will need any special tools, cam locking tool, etc, to change the timing belts on a 16v & VIS?

Hi Matthew,
The only tool according to the manual is the belt tensioner tool that as far as I'm aware most people don't use anyway, if you're changing the belts you also need to change the tensioner bearings as well, these frequently seize if not changed and will throw the belts off with a lot of bent valves as a result.
You also need to be very careful with the tensioning and make sure the that they're not too tight and don't whine, I had a belt shed it's teeth on my second 1993 Vis Auto at 18,000 miles, back about 1997. I finished up with 8 bent valves, and a head rebuild which cost over £1000, just pleased that Lancia picked up  most of the tab, as they agreed the belt was faulty, there was also a modification that changed the toothed wheels along with a new belt fairly late on, to overcome broken belts, didn't help me though as mine had had them fitted from new!

Don't forget that you need to lock the Flywheel. There is a special tool for this, but someone nicked the Thema Consortiums.

Don't worry, you can get around this quite easily. On the front of the Gearbox bell housing these is a Flywheel sensor held in place by two small bolts (10mm I think). If you remove the sensor, you can then insert a short screwdriver with a broad flat head which will slot in between the teeth of the flywheel.

Get an assitant to hold the screwdriver into a slot in the flywheel and then turn the engine by hand until the screwdriver takes up the slack and locks the flywheel. You should then be able to get the big bolt off with the assistance of a 4 foot long extension bar and some appropriate swear words!  Shocked

Remember to refit the sensor otherwise the car won't start! Easy to forget.  Roll Eyes
