Firstly, VERY nice colour
Secondly, please excuse my ignorance, why did you decide to powder coat the wheels instead of painting? Whats the advantage? is it purely durability?

And what are the costs compared to painting please.

The powder coating is much much harder than paint and therefore will last a lot longer - I hope. Lepsons do a full service of refurbishment and had a fair amount of work to do on my wheels, so the cost was £70+VAT per wheel plus a small extra charge for the colour of paint, which I think was reasonable. They normally do alloy wheel refurbishment, my wife's Mini alloy wheel cost £63+VAT to refurbish and it looked like new!

Sounds good and looks good, but others beware! Lepsons have a good reputation, but at first they made a mess of my Cromadoras because they assumed wrongly that they were aluminium alloy and not magnesium-aluminium. The pre-treatment is different and mine had to be done again.

Slow progress............but the n/s wing has now been shaped to the correct profile.

Ed, that looks like a lot of work, but have I missed something ?  What was the problem with the wing ?   I thought you were further on than that, with the whole body in at least etch primer.

Good luck with it, what is your chassis number, mine is 3447 and I've been told that is late for a 4th series.

Andy, first the car had all its paint stripped off and then it was given a coat of etch primer, then my paint chap starts getting the shape right with filler. I'm not sure how other paint shops do their prep but this seems to work. Andy (the paint man) did Ade's car as well.

i usually bare metal all over, etch then fill over the top, etch is good to stop surface rust starting but thin enough to show up defects such as pin holes or stress cracks,it also adheases to the bare metal better than filler, however most polyester spray fillers will not go over etch though so i tend to flat it all off before this process, polyester is more stable and higher build than ordinary 2k prima and doesnt shrink like 2k can, it litterally is a filler and has to be primered over before paint, B20's looking good,  Wink

I was over at Andy's again this morning and he confirms that after the bare metal he uses etch primer, then does the filling and shaping and then another coat of etch before he undercoats the car. Things are moving on he has progressed to the front n/s wing!

Ed and James, thanks for those comments, I will get to  that stage one day .......... I hope !!!!

In the meantime I am fabricating a bracket to support the rear of the dynamo on the Appia. The alloy block casting should have a support but that on my car has fractured, quite a common problem I am told. My car has been making do solely with the one on the timing chain cover and I count myself lucky that has not fractured also. Having made a bracket and installed the dynamo, I  was congratulating myself on a job well done when it became apparent that I could not get the fan belt on, the new, oh so clever, bracket prevented the dynamo moving enough to get the clearance. A lot of expletives and start again. I am working outside at the moment and was beaten by the light, play will resume tomorrow morning !!
