The windscreen on the Dedra has one massive crack in it, so i'm getting a replacement, however is the removal & subsequent fitting of another windscreen a difficult job?

Also, I've taken the black plastic housing off that gives access to the windscreen wiper motor etc... so i can see the bottom of the windscreen, now a small part of the metal shelf that the windscreen appears to sit on is slightly rusted (i'll post a photo), but i'm not sure how easy that is to fix!

I cannot get the starter motor off, am i missing something, or is it literally just a case of two bolts/screws & it should come out of the housing, do they get stuck??

Finally (i'm being kept busy by Dedra!) I have a new windscreen wiper motor on the way, again is this a straight forward job???

Of & definitley finally i intend to take the suspension apart & have a good look to see whats what, how would i best best propping up the front of the car, as far as i know i have axle stands but am always wary of putting them in the wrong place!!!

Cheers guys!

Hi Mark, Question 1, Yes, as it's welded in,  Best left to specialist windscreen people, but going by your photo, I think you need someone to take the old one out, then leave refitting the new one until you have repaired the windscreen channel as that doesn't look good, and once the windscreen is out you may well find that it's more extensive, although I hope it isn't, but it certainly looks like a weld repair job.

Best place for the axle stands if you want to be able to get at the front suspension is under the trolley jack lifting points inboard, and slightly back from under the rear edge of the front wings, use a block of wood or rubber pads in between the axle stands and the jacking points.

Are you sure you've got all the starter motor bolts, looking at an illustration of the starter motor it looks like there's a bracket at the front of the starter motor underneath that bolts to the side of the block? but I've never taken one off so I'm not sure, if you have got all the bolts out then you need to try shocking it with a hide mallet or a block of wood and a club hammer.
Wiper motor, are we talking complete wiper mechanism with all the linkage or just the motor?

Hi Brian,

Cheers for the reply. I'll see if i can get a replacement channel so, & get the windscreen & channel replaced.

I'll double check on the starter motor once i have the car up on axle stands, as at the moment it won't budge, so i'd say your right, there could well be a bolt etc that i haven't yet removed!

regarding the wiper motor, it will literally just be the motor that needs to be replaced.

Hi Mark,
Motor itself is no great problem but you'll probably have to remove the complete asm to get at the motor, be very careful not to strip anything, as if I remember it's easy to do so, particularly the bellcrank lever that is on the wiper motor spindle, while it's out check the linkage bushes for wear, as it's those that cause the drivers side wiper to bang up against the A pillar side.
Bushes migh still be availalable via Fiat as they were used on Tipos and other models, there are 2 sizes but a lot depends on the year of your Dedra, the early ones up to 1992 had replaceable bushes, you removerd the old bushes and pressed in the new, nowhere near as easy as it sounds, in fact I always used to buy another 2 or 3 of each because of breakages.
If you have the later linkage the bushes were pressed in, and while you can butcher the old ones to get them out, fitting new bushes is near impossible, after my suggestion one owner took the linkage and new bushes to his local machine shop who removed the old, then machined the linkage to take the old type bushes.
if you can't get old type bushes I may have a set somewhere.
The other alternative is to see if you can get hold of a secondhand linkage, new haven't been available for about 4-5 years, when they cost about £130 at the time. but do check for wear.
The wiper mechanism can be accessed after removing the wiper arms, then remove the plastic panel in front of the windscreen, you can then get at everything, but best to remove as a complete asm, it's also a good idea to check the drain tubes in the plenum chamber and make sure they are clear of debris.
If you need the diagrams let me know.

Ah !! windscreen removal. I removed the windscreen from my Thema, not easy I have a tool that I use in my own trade thats adaptable for cutting the bonding agent between the glass and the frame. Its called  a Fine cut tool made by "Feine" prounounced fine. very expensive tool and in my hands I found it rather difficult. It has a sharp blade that vibrates very fast and slices through the bonding agent. I found it hard to get into the corners with it. The reason for doing this myself was to fix the rust before  I went to the wnidscreen replacment people . I think you are better leaving it to the professionals. Just watch out for any scratching that may take the paint off the frame that you wont see after the screen is fixed back, this can cause rust later. Undecided

Just one other thing about windscreens, I bought the new screen from Kevin Mc Bride here in Dublin in "Donohues" Fiat dealer, it cost me half the price of what I was quoted from my local windscreen replacment shop. I had it fitted at the paint shop after the rust was repaired.  David Grin

I've had a fair few dealings with Kevin & he's a top guy for discounts!!! If there is anyone else Irish in this club, i'd strongly recommend Kevin for parts!
