Title: Buying a car from the USA with "no title"
Post by: DavidLaver on 05 August, 2017, 10:29:16 PM

A long shot but I've got to ask...a friend (yes REALLY not me!!!) is looking at a car in the USA being sold without title.  A quick google would suggest "stay well clear" and "if you do then expect it to be a lot of time, trouble and money".

He's a romantic, the car is being sold for pennies and its very much a "please save it", and he's willing to put some graft in.

Does anyone here understand the process to take ownership, move over state boarders, to export?

David

There are certainly many who know more than me, but if your friend is going to register it here the DVLA usually need some kind of registration document from the country which it was exported from.

If it can be solved in the US then I think that is what I would try.

I have successfully registered a couple of cars from abroad (one in the EU, one outside the EU0 in the UK without papers in the past but I did need to be able to prove the date of manufacture from factory records or similar. I also needed to be able to show what I had paid for it in the case of the one where there was duty to be paid.
