Title: the reason for no brakes became clear!
Post by: toby2449 on 25 November, 2007, 06:38:10 PM
so, there i was thinking this weekend i'd sort the Dedra's brakes as they didn't work at all. so got pads, a bleeding kit, & some dot 4.

so, off come the wheels for the new pads, and all became clear as to why they didn't work, the drivers side front wheel had pads (badly worn) but no fluid, oh & a seized piston, & the passanger side had fluid but no pads at all!! as i've not really done this before, everything took much longer than it should have & in the end i had to give up, so roll on next weekend when i should be able to sort the brakes completely!

Hi Toby,
Remember our conversations by email,
Don't forget when you get to the rear calipers you need the tool to wind the pistons back, do not attempt to force them back or you will be looking at changing the calipers, as forcing them back will destroy the automatic handbrake adjusters.

Toby. Welcome.  If you go to your local garage and ask them to show you a caliper wind back tool, they will have one, and depending how well you get on with the garage, they may lend you the tool, or at least show you how it works, they are really easy to use, just a tip though, before you start loosen the handbrake cable until the the arms on the caliper go back against their stops, i.e. just so there is a tiny bit of slack on the cable, then you can wind back pistons . only wind the pistons back just so you can get the new pads in the caliper and over the discs with about a 1mm gap between the caliper and the back of the pads. Any probs send me a PM and I will send you my tel number and we can go through it over the phone. Cheers Roger.

Hi Toby,
Yes, no problem I can email the relevant bit from the manual, but personally I'd take Roger up on his offer ;D

btw, i took out the piston on one of the front brakes, to give it a clean etc... but now can't get it to fit back into the hole, the rubber keeps on bending in on itself, any suggestions??

get some rubber grease,  its red, a little smear a on the seal, and a little on the piston, make the piston is going in square, and try and revolve piston as inserting into caliper, if you have not got rubber grease, use clean brake fluid around rubber in caliper and piston. If that does'nt work, cut 2 holes in floor and use the flinstone method. ;D ;D

Toby,
Make sure the cable is well greased and that the arm on the caliper is free.
any other advice is down to Brian as that's as much as I know about it.

Toby, is it the cable or the caliper not returning properly? If its the cable probably best to replace, if its tha caliper arms not returning properly with cables removed, ( my guess its the calipers), remove h/brake cable from caliper and squirt WD40 or similar all over the arm that the cable goes into, and move the arm back and forth until the arms return by themselves against the stops, then reassemble as described before. Did you manage to sort out front brakes? Roger.

ah thanks guys for the interest, however the weekend turned out to be less than productive. as the moment the garage is out of action, so any work i'm doing is done outside, & since it was freezing cold, wet & windy i got nothing done. I so so so wanted to get them sorted but it wasn't gonna happen. hopefully i can get it in the garage soon & renew my work.

But that'll have to wait for another couple of weeks, as guys i'm off to Las Vegas this Saturday!!!!!!!!!! Staying in the Venitian, second time there & would highly recommend it. So hey if i get lucky i might be able to get alot more for the Dedra sooner than i thought! ;D

well i didn't get lucky in Vegas :(

so i hope to re-start working on the brakes next weekend, however i'm very worried about messing up on the rear brakes, i have the tools to take them off properly, but i'm just wondering how do i wind back the rear calipers without messing them up, oh and i'd like to jack the rear of the car up entirely, i have two jack stands to do this, but the points under the car to put the stands aren't clear (well to me) any clues on where is the best place to put the stands?? its my greatest worry that if i put them in the wrong place i'll end up making a very expensive error!

Hi Toby,
Just refresh my memory of your Dedra 1.8ie,   is it fitted with ABS? as that will make a difference in procedure.

Please email me the answers, & I'll email you back the relevant pages from the manual.

Do you have a handbook for your car? if so look up jacking up the car with a hydraulic jack, or cars jack, in my handbook it's page 96, this shows where to place the axle stands, make sure to use a block of wood between the axle stand & body.

cheers Brian,i'll look that up in my handbook

ps,whats the reason for the block of wood??

Hi Toby,
Wood gives so you won't damage anything such as the metal flange by a metal to metal contact, it's also less likely to slip ;D

Manual information will be on the way to you later today.

BTW is it correct that (as i look into the engine bay) the brake master cylinder is on the left of the bay & the brake fluid container thingy is on the right!

Bear in mind that "Brake fluid container thingy" also feeds the hydraulic clutch :o
