Title: Sport Perspex Headlamp Covers
Post by: kevbo on 22 February, 2016, 01:35:48 PM
I've got a pair of Perspex headlamp covers for my Sport from Omicron.  The covers are over-sized and come with small fixing clips, they're folded sprung steel with small teeth inboard. I wondered if anyone has used a pair of these covers and has any tips eg how did the Perspex cutting go, did you paint the clips (they're dark coloured) prior to fitting and how did the fitting go?

There are a number of us that have these. Omicron trimmed mine to my headlamp surrounds within the v expensive price some 6-7 years ago. I just use the clips as is and ensure the aluminium head lamp surrounds (S2) stand proud of the wing edge by 1mm. I fit the outer clips first and slide in the perspex then clip to the grill side. They need to come off fairly frequently fo cleaning as when you wash your car the soap tends to run inside the lens - which is tolerable a few times but get a bit opaque after a bit of use...

Many thanks for that Tim.  Are you able to open up the clips you fit on the outer, wing edge?  I guess it's a matter of actually trying.

Fitting the headlamp covers: I fitted a set last year. The easiest way to do it is to cover both inside and outside of the cover with masking tape. Take the aluminium surround from your headlight, place it on the inside of the cover, draw around the line outside of the aluminium frame. Then, using a bandsaw with a fine toothed blade, cut to the line. A tip here is if the gap in the table of the bandsaw is quite wide use a piece of hardboard or mdf to partly reduce this gap by cutting a slot in it and then leave the piece of wood in place, taping it to the table.

I don't believe the headlight covers - or mine weren't at least, made out of Perspex. I believe they may be made out of lexan which is a shatter proof material that is used for industrial guards.
