I know VW can't be allowed to get away with what was done, but it makes me wonder what would happen if all countries affected took the same view, it would probably push VW to the wall, and that would hardly be good for anyone's economy.

True, but remember that VW is effectively a "bank" now with £80 or £100 billions of car loans/PCPs, etc off loaded in bundles to other major banks, if as you say other big markets follow suit, the walls will tumble down!

The implications seem never ending. On tv someone was saying that for instance, the British Government has every right to bring a case against VW for loss of revenue - for cars that should have been liable for road tax.
