Post by: simonandjuliet on 03 November, 2015, 04:47:04 PM Unfortunately standard Appia is about 78 mm not 98 as on the van, apparently the nut is v tight so the chain wrench is unlikely to work, but always worth a try !
I think that I will have to try making a tool, anyone any experience of cutting steel to make a spanner ? Title: Re: Nuts ! We have successfully made spanners from 6 or 8mm flat. Cut out the two faces at 98mm, keep it as a closed item ie cut a square out of the flat, rather than open ended. The other (easier) way to achieve this, is to cut it as an open ended spanner, but then weld a piece across the open end to give it that extra strength. Andy Title: Re: Nuts ! Post by: the.cern on 03 November, 2015, 06:13:06 PM Another thought, we have done this as well, is to use a piece of suitably sized piece of square or rectangular hollow section. Cut, say a 100mm length, weld a 'cheek' in to produce the required 98mm across the flats and either weld a bar across the end or onto one side to act as the lever or drill holes in opposite faces through which to pass a bar as the lever.

Heat is a very undervalued tool in the workshop and can save a lot of heartache. Also try to ascertain whether it's LH or RH thread!
