Title: Fulvia fuel pressure
Post by: rogerelias on 10 September, 2007, 05:34:50 PM
Hello all. Does anyone out there what the fuel pressure to the carbs should be on the 1600 hf solex carbs, i need the pressure in psi please. ??? I am using a bendix electric pump through a filter king so I can adjust the pressure manually. Many thanks Roger.

Hi Roger,
not 100 % sure but I believe the 1600 HF should be at 3.5 psi
for confirmation send a PM to Chris he will defo know.
regards
Geoff

I have looked on CD of Fulvia technical data, for 818.540 engine it should 2.7 to 3.3 mH20 not sure what is in PSi?  I hope that is of some use.

Thanks Neil. I saw the same in my book too. Its something to do with Mercury over water or something like that, ??? maybe some one can convert this to psi for me.  :)

10.2mH20 = 1 bar = 14.5psi

so 3m H2O = approx 4.2psi

Quite low pressure then even for 1600HF.

According to Huib (who has extensive Fulvia experience) on the Viva-Lancia.com Forum the original fuel pump produces a constant pressure of about 0,3 to 0,35 bar which is the correct value for the Solexes.
He went on to say that for some carbs such as the Dellorto DHLB works best with a much lower pressure of 2 psi. In this case a regulator is recommended.

So a pressure of 4.2 psi would seem to be more than enough!

Thanks Chris, Neils 1 &2, and of course the colonel, and everyone for the help, now THIS is when  a forum is very useful. i am going to reset pressure to 2.5psi from 1.5 psi that i am running at the moment, and work my way up ,and see how i get on. has anyone ever done a gas conversion on a fulvia? now thats a challenge. ;D

I believe many Lancias were converted to run on gas in Greece

Hi all

Just went through this the other month and played around with a red top electric pump / filter king and a pressure gauge.

I was suprised but didnt comment when I saw huib's comments as a mechanical pump is anything but constant but does "smooth out" at above 3000. This was my bench mark as I was trying to see if higher fule pressure would cure a high speed faultering of the carbs which were 35 delortos (see much earlier thread - conclusion was carbs just to small for 1600). Anyway that test started a c2.5psi, then 3psi, then 3.5. made no real difference, so have set at 3psi for 42 mm solexs and not had any problems. Dont forget there is a fuel return line that makes high pressure a bit irrelevant! What you dont want is over fueling at tick over which is why 2nd series had return pipes I believe.

When i last went to Greece i too ran on gas ;D ;D

I also run Dellortos on my Fulvia (1300) and a Filter King filter/regulator, but no idea on the fuel pressure, when the car is back on the road with its new mechanical fuel pump I will need to check.  Also I sealed off the return pipe at the front, should I need it if the regulator is doing its job?

When I fitted Dellorto 32 DHLa's to my 1091cc Fulvia 2c Berlina about 5 years ago, I also fitted a filter king, I didn't have a fuel return to worry about but I fitted the fuel king as supplied, and haven't had to check fuel pressure or reset it as it has run fine since fitting, ;D "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Seems to me fuel pressure c3-4psi is about right and carbs can cope. However..... My dellorto tech book states that DHLA's should not have fuel pressure exceeding 3psi. I wouldnt expect a stock filter king to be set at this or above.....

Could someone who has fitted a Filter King filter and regulator please explain what the advantages are over a standard Lancia setup.I am specifically interested in relation to a 1.6HF used in normal road mode although model type probably dosent matter?

Filter King filter and regulator only work as an extra level of fuel filtering, you could use a disposable in line item as an alternative, as previously mentioned the regulator smooths the fuel flow at which ever pressure it is set, the pump is not adjustable, so if you fitted different carbs you can adjust to suit.  Also it is all in one unit, any help?

Please correct me if I have have got it all wrong!

Ok,that sounds logical.Am currently using an inline filter, but I was wondering if you used an electric pump along with an adjustable regulator on standard 42mm Solexes would it make starting easier if the car is not in regular use? It is no problem to start when hot or when used within a day or two of being previously started, but if lying for a while I assume the fuel drains back and has to be re pressurised by the mechanical pump.

I think fitting an electric pump purely for starting is a proven help. I intend to do that on my 1300. I have exactly the same thing, using the battery up just sucking the fuel back through. There was an article on exactly how to do it in an old VL but it's pretty simple and I'm sure you know what to do. Wish I could remember the author - he's a well known Fulvia fan. He mentioned fitting a small pump to the inner wing. When I looked at the pump in a catalogue it said it should be placed close to the tank. I wrote to the author to clarify and he said it should be placed close to the tank if it was to be the main pump to avoid vapourisation but if it's only going to be used to pull fuel through for starting then the inner wing is fine. Basically, a pipe came from the electric pump to the mechanical pump. Just after the electric pump a tee piece took a line off to the carbs to join another tee piece in the carb inlet pipe. This forms a circuit. When the pump is on, the fuel goes through the 2 tee pieces straight to the carbs bypassing the mechanical pump, when it's off the fuel flows through the normal pipes. Hope that's right - it's been a long time since I read it.

Eyeore. I fiited a bendix electric pump to my fulvia 1600hf as i do not use it all the time. it does save the battery having to turn the engine over until fuel gets up to carbs again after lack of use. The filter king is fitted as the the pump delivery pressure is alot higher than the standard pump, also if you did not have the filter king fitted, and adjusted correctly, believe me, the fuel will go past the  floats and in the inlet manifold and into the bores, it happened to me as i had the ignition on to sort out a indicator wiring problem, and i then went to start the car and it tried to hydraulic in the bores . Have now set the fuel pressure to 2.5 psi, and is now alot cleaner on pick up from low down. Hope that this helps. Roger.

The secondary FACET electric fuel pump is really worth doing to prime carbs (and can also act as a back up if the mechanical pump fails - unlikely). The article  was in November 04 pg 13 by Anrea Nistri. Chris Hopkins should have library reprints. I have fitted this to 1600 Sport (but in line with the mechanical pump to save plumbing as an experiment wiith no seemly adverse effects) and one to 1300. My 1300 uses one of the unused dash switches. Both pumps were fitted to front wing. My HF1600 has a race pump as the main fuel deliverer with Filter King following discussions with some of the fulvia racers who saw benefits in adequate fuel delivery in high performance use. with all cars they now start on the button (after priming) regardless oflay up. I also recommend battery conditioners. :D
