Title: BETA: Establishing Date, Place of Manufacture
Post by: arguti on 20 October, 2014, 04:06:00 PM
Newbie here...Hello!

I have inherited a 1600 Beta Coupe in South Africa and plan on shipping the car to the UK shortly but I need to establish when and where was manufactured - both from a dating perspective but also the country of manufacture as there is quite a difference in VAT and duty depending on where it was manufactured (- some of these may have been assembled in South Africa - does anybody know?)

Alfa UK are trying to help but require a photo of the chassis plate - all I have currently is a numerical VIN on the South African V5 Registration equivalent which state date of first registration 1984

A photo of the car below: 1600 coupe and RHD.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

cheers

Hi

A topical question this as just come up on the Betaboyz forum. I think you will need to see the chassis plate to be certain as there is some debate about kits being built in SA.

Interesting to see steel wheels on a 1600 as well as the boot spoiler and that 1600 were still being registered in 1984.

Sorry I am not able to help, suggest you put a request on the Betaboyz site. It will be interesting to know the outcome.

Peter

Thanks, do you have a link to the discussion on the betaboyz forum as I cant seem to find it?

I will report back when I hopefully get a photo of the actual chassis plate.

Friend of mine bought a South African built Fulvia about 3-4 years ago, it was built at the Daihatsu Plant and carried a Daihatsu Sticker on the offside inner wheelarch, however the most prominent marking was stamping around the offside turret, can't remember if it was a chassis number or a Commissioning Number? I'm still trying to locate the photos!
All attempts to garner further information from the plant that still exists were unaswered.
I should also have export paperwork to show where it was buiult and the details.

Hi Brian

From posts on Betaboyz, it appears that Diahatsu built the Fulvias, but another company built some Betas called TAK motors whoever they are?

Betas were only assembled (from knock down kits) in South Africa until 1978. This one looks later than that from the black trim. If it has the black, rather than brown, dash it will most likely have been built in Italy. As above you really need a photo of the chassis plate to be sure.
