Title: Fulvia running like a bag of nails !
Post by: HF_Dave on 27 April, 2014, 07:03:33 PM
I have developed a problem with my Fulvia, It starts up no problem and then when put under load it miss fires and chugs along. I checked the fuel flow and filters from the tank , the points , the timing and changed the spark plugs ! it ran a bit better when I changed the plugs but it s still not right. The temp wont rise to normal running temp, and then it runs smooth for no reason at all  !!  ???, Iif I pull the choke a little it seems to run better . Could there be a blockage in the carbs ?  Its wreching my head to fugure this out ! Any ideas ? Thanks David. :-\

Have you checked the "micro" mesh filter on the inlet union on rear carb ?

I had exactly that on my augusta, gauze partially chocked so the carb would run out before it could refill

Condensor, its always the condenser.

Does sound similar to the carb problems I had on my Beta. That was dirt in the float chambers, jet feeds and the jets themselves. Cleaning the jets was a temporary fix, but further dirt would then be dragged into them from the float chamber. Only a total strip and clean ou,t with everything blown through with an airline fixed it.

Easy to check out Peter's condenser suggestion though.

Does sound similar to a condensor breaking down. I had something like this on my Fulvia years ago - as you say, like a bag of nails, spluttering along, running rough, and that's what it was. For the price of a new one it's worth a go

And do the points at the same time! Either fit new ones or stone-down the old ones to take out peaks and pits. The last set of points I did had massive pits, about 0.3mm deep. A defective condenser can cause this sort of migration of metal from one contact to the other.

Thanks for the advise, I fitted a new coil and HT leads today and its running perfect :D, Amate of mine suggested the coil and i got a Bosch one and replaced the Intermotor one that was bought new in 2009 while I was restoring the car. I thought I was covering all the bases by replacing everything at the time, but time goes by very fast and five years has gone by in a flash. I am going to replace the distributor with a new electronic one from Omicron . Has anyone tried this replacement yet ? it's expensive at 280 plus vat , but the car has cost me very little since the restoration . Thanks. David. :)
