I may be showing my ignorance but, looking at the photos, rear light, instrument panel, later wheels than rolled rim.  Is this really a first series?  But the reg. number fits 1937 I think.  Perhaps someone has done some modifying in the past.  Will be interested in comments from Aprilia experts.  Whatever, a great project for someone.

I agree – a great project for someone, sadly not me.

Putting my Aprilia anorak on, I see:

•   'Square' instruments suggesting that it is a Lusso, which started in 1938, I think. Other external features of a Lusso (and later cars) include an air-scoop below the windscreen, which is just about visible here.
•   Non-metric instruments, suggesting it is Lancia Alperton car. The seats look like leather trim too, which would be consistent with a UK car.
•   The centre light on the boot lid is original, but not the lights on the wings, or the front indicators.
•   The rocker cover is 1st Series adapted to have a stay to the top of the radiator. 2nd Series cars had this moulded into the casting. 2nd Series cars had a tank and fitting on the bulkhead for the front suspension oiler – this is absent (I think), again suggesting 1st Series.
•   A nice big Weber carburettor, which is non-standard, but quite common. As is the SU type electric fuel pump
•   Rolled rim wheels were fitted only to very early cars. From 1938 onwards, most had plain steel rims. 2nd Series wheels had triangular shaped piercing, on earlier cars these were rounded in shape.
•   The steering wheel looks 2nd Series, but this could have been fitted later.

So, I reckon it is 1st Series, probably from late 1937 or 1938, with later mods typical of what was done in the 1960s.

I’ll now take my anorak off and get on with the gardening.

P, Milk churns – wonderful! I take you post to be a surreal fantasy in the spirit of one of my favourite writers, Flann O’Brien, whose works you might be familiar with. But, apart from the use of aluminium, is there really a connection with the Aprilia? Or is it the anorak?

Got it - doh! I guess this adds authenticity to it being a barn-find.

I forgot to comment on one of the photos. It looks like twin exhaust pipes - if these go all the way back to twin flanges at the manifold, then that's very unusual, and enviable! I bet that car was very quick.

the 2nd car used to live in Wrexham for many years, it was owned by Trevor Rumens for many years and sadly was only restored after he passed away, I know his granddaughter who was over the moon to see it was still in the uk
