Title: What colour for my B20
Post by: the.cern on 12 January, 2012, 04:35:21 PM
I have had my brain and thought processes prodded by Stu's recent thread about the body colour for his Fulvia coupe.

Hopefully I will soon be in a position where I will be sending the B20 shell to be sprayed. Basically, Jim has finished all the welding and it is now sound. The doors, bootlid and bonnet now need his loving care and some attention from his big hammer and welder !!!! After that it will be off to the bodyshop and at that point I will have to specify the finished body colour.

The car was resprayed in the early 70's in what I was told was a Jaguar colour, a lovely rich maroon. I have only ever known the car in that colour although it is clear that the original finish was black. I have never seen a black B20 and am finding it hard to visualise what it would look like. Has anyone got experience of a black B20? If so, please share your thoughts on it. I have never been too keen on black cars as they can quickly look dirty and I really am one of the world's worst when it comes to cleaning cars !!!!!

So the big question ..... stick with the maroon which I love, or go back to black?

Jim, of course, perverse so n so that he is, insists that I should go for originality, a message also coming over loud and clear in Stu's thread on the Fulvia!!

I feel it all hangs on how good, or otherwise, does a B20 look in black?

Comments please to help me in this dilemma.

Andy, it would look pretty good in black, but you'd be washing it every day! How ever any dark shade (even maroon) would mean the same cleaning regime really.

No doubt at all it was black originally, was the colour on the original log book if you have it?

Personally, yes, it would look good in black.....when is it going to the paint shop, hoping to see it before hand!!??

WPD 10 is dark green.
I would go for its original colour, B20s look good in black, my first B20 was black, see photos.

Here are a couple more photos for you;  WPD 10 in dark green and couple of B20s the one on the left is Lancia blue the one on the right is black. Both pictures from Aurelia lunches.

If you must have it in maroon go for the original Lancia colour, amaranto.

I've never liked black cars - until now.

My favourite is the light metalic blue on Peter Harding's car.  I need to find the photo from a Silverstone car park perhaps 25 years ago that used to be my pin-up.

Scroll down this thread for the green one with a two tone dash.  I rather like it.

Pete Harding's is a special Pinin Farina colour.
Here are a couple more, Mettalic grey (Although these cars are two different shades) and beige (Sorry I don't know the proper name for this shade)

Beige is a great colour. I wish I'd painted my spyder beige now, rather than opting for the original grigio (white).

That swatch picture of the spyders is fantastic, Ade :)

I vote black.

Was always told the real issue with black paint is the quality of the bodywork - if it's not perfect it's very unforgiving.

Dirt is another thing.  A lifestyle choice!

Yes, black is supposed to be the most unforgiving of colours - but can look fantastic.

Another issue is how you intend to use the car. Maybe this isn't an issue in Merry England, but here, the summers are quite hot, and a dark car can be really tough. I had a B20 in dark brown and there is about a 10º difference between being in that car in the hot summer sun and the light tan one.

First question: originality or not. If so, then no questions or doubts. A tough call. The other way out is to use an original color, regardless. That turns out to be trickier to ID than one might imagine, but recommended.

Good luck!

PS - another vote for the soft 1950s pastels. Really sweet. Although the darks (green, blue, black and amaranto) have a charm of their own.

IMHO the pastel colours used on the earlier B20s really suit the lines of the car as can be clearly seen on Adrian Donovans pale blue car shown earlier.
The 4th Series B20 which we have owned since 1978 is beige and this was certainly not a popular colour for a B20 in the 80's and 90's - look at how B20s were painted varying shades of silver metallic around this time. Funnily enough the pastel colours have come back into fashion now and I cant wait to see my latest 4th Series B20 project painted pastel grey in a year or so - its original colour.
For maximum resale value, any dealer would say  you should keep the car the original colour (and black is certainly a colour which needs a very straight body to look its best) but it is your car and therefore your choice.
Jacky's B24S Convertible was originally silver metallic with a bright red leather/leathercloth interior which she really disliked and when the time came to choose the colour to repaint the shell, she chose Newmarket Grey (a sort of metallic gunmetal grey with a hint of green in it and an original B20 6th Series colour ) exactly as Geoff Hewittson's late B20 (who had the ICI paint recipe) with a green leather interior. Some purists were appalled but over time they have  grudgingly admitted it is a lovely understated combination.

Agree Chris....the 50s pastels were so right for the cars of the period, plus they seem so of the time they are hard to fault, even the grey for your car, which looks so wrong on many cars of many eras, will look spot on for yours. Got a pic of the proposed colour on a sample B20?

Not a fan of metallics in that period, don't ask me why! But for certain combos, they do look ok.

Title: Re: What colour for my B20

There is something else to consider when choosing colour. As Geoff and Chris say, B20s look lovely in light pastel shades, but they look great in the darker ones too. My car was a very pale blue “Celeste Pininfarina”, which I thought was lovely and I wanted it that way, but light shades like this show up any deficiencies in door shuts and gaps around bonnet and boot. I have seen darker shaded cars that looked good from a distance but on closer inspection the gaps and shuts were less than wonderful.

Personally, if you like the maroon, I would go for an original Amaranto, there are too many B20's in silver, grey, black and blue!

Mine is going to be green........when it gets finished.

I cannot resist, after previous post, to show this photo, to highlight the interest of dark colors.
Colour choice is always difficult, I had no choice: my B20 was black, its original colour!

As regards the cosmetic maintenance of dark cars:
If my car is dirty, really dirty, it only means I have used it as it should be used, driven many kilometers, and enjoyed it on the road.
When I wash it, after such a long trip, always by hand, I can enjoy and rediscover its curves, and shapes. What an experience...

Take care with Amaranto.  What is called 'Amaranto' by a number of paint manufacturers bears no resemblance to the colour of the B20s I recall encountering in the 50s and 60s.  This is very dark indeed and very similar to a standard colour for the Lambda which I am having some difficulty replicating for the Weymann. Lukas Huni's recently restored Lambda is right (see below)and the (glorious) Ferrari at http://www.fantasyjunction.com/cars/826-Ferrari-375%20America-4%20Litre%20V12 looks like Amaranto to me.

Thats interesting John.
I always thought Roberto Pozzi's Amaranto 3rd Series B20 was the 'correct' Lancia Amaranto (and it is a lovely colour). I dont have a photo of it handy - maybe someone else does? It is nothing like the Ferrari colour being much lighter.

In the early 1990's Lechler put out new paint codes for older Lancia paint colors. Supposedly, these had been carefully vetted to match the original colors, but as there is no Lechler distribution in the states,  we've never seen what these look like. So too, not all the colors seem to be listed, but that's another can of worms. The list is below, with some discussion here:

http://web.me.com/geoffreyg/Cars/Blog/Entries/2006/2/27_So_what_are_the_colors.html

One idea was that a Club could have the samples made up as a swatch book for loan... but the US club is just not big enough for that...

Thank you so much everyone for the numerous comments and advice that my request has provoked.

Geoff (GG), I had already found your blog on colour (I keep finding extra threads and blogs from your site which make fascinating and, I think, essential reading for restorers). I looked up the two listed codes for Amaranto and they appear to be a grey commonly used by Lambretta, but I will persevere !

Thank you John (Turner) for the Lambda photo, that colour looks so dark compared to the red of my car as purchased. The trouble with photos is that they rarely show the true  colour and it is not possible to gauge how far off tone they may be. The (possible) Pozzi car is much darker than that which I was anticipating as a possibility, but certainly looks good and could be a real contender !!

William, with regard to dirty being a lifestyle choice I understand what you are saying, but to me dirt is more of a mandatory extra !!!! It most definitely is not optional !!!!

Thank you again for the help and advice, the decision has yet to be made, so if any other thoughts arise please do share them. I do hear and agree with the comment that whatever colour I choose, it should be one that was originally available, otherwise the field is open.

I have attached a photo of my car, as dragged out of the garage, to indicate the red that I thought may be an option. It would appear that  such a light red was not originally available and thus should be excluded.

Has anyone a picture of John Savage's car?   I remember that as a similar colour to that.

Mine was in an early 70s Ford Capri "suburst red".  When it came to a repaint I went all the way round and back and went with just the same again.  From traces found on the car I think the original was a sea blue, maybe with almost a metal flake - or was that an early 70s Hammerite colour.

Thinking about it has ANYONE been brave enough to replicate an original metalic?

David

There was an article about 10 years ago in the Wall Street Journal (!) about Paul Russell making a 1950's metallic for a Gullwing Mercedes - and how they had to make their own metal flakes, as the flakes were smaller and finer back then. People have probably done this since, but the '50s metallics were really small flakes!

If memory serves right, Pozzi's Amaranto was a stunning color on the car. I wonder if its the original color paint.

Geoffrey,
Here another photo of Roberto Pozzi's B20, taken on the Sardinia trip in 2007.
That color (a dark reddish brown) reproduces very badly on a computer screen, one has to see it to describe it! That color is also spoken of as "testa di moro", not PC perhaps, but descriptive!

Knowing Roberto and the italians, it must be the original color! (I can ask him if you want)

When I was searching for the right original colour to paint my B50 it took ages to find the right shade of metallic blue with the correct size of flakes in it, especially as it was a Pinin Farina colour not a Lancia one. Although in the end when I found the correct shade it turned out to be Bleu Sera, a common colour used on Ferraris and Maseratis.

Is that Tim Riley who does (or did?) rally an Aprilia?   If so an excellent home for the old war horse.  I loved John's stories of racing his Aurelia back when I'd just got mine.

Looking at all the pictures back again the maroon looks a bit "Jaguar".  I really don't tend to like black - I think of it as a boy racer BMW colour - but it looks fantastic on a B20 and it would be unusual as well as being THE original colour.  Unless you intend to tour Italy in the summer it shouldn't get too hot - ventilation isn't too bad in a B20 and given you're happy in a heaterless Appia for New Years day you must be a hardy soul.

All the same I love the pastels and am itching to see an Aurelia in a beach-buggy metal flake, pref parked infront of futuristic 1950s house.

Noticed the comment on Lechler paints by Geoff (GG) so thought this might be of use...

Go to: http://explorer.lechler.it (http://explorer.lechler.it)

Login with 'email': admin@zero-paints.co.uk
Password: zeropaints

You should now be logged in ... so click on 'Formula' which will bring up a 'Formula Search' panel. Select Lancia as the manufacturer and click 'Find' ... this should give all the codes for all Lancia paints.

Of course if you know a friendly Lechler paint shop then they should be able to make you up a sample.
I came across the 'Zero Paints' resource as I needed some colour matched paint and found a company in the UK who will do colour matched samples for any Lechler paint code for a fiver! A potentially useful and inexpensive route for original Lancia colour samples if you're undecided between colours but about to spend a small fortune on a respray!

Hi Geoff

I know from your separate Blog site that you know way more about Lancia oriented paints than I do!

The site I mentioned in passing can make up small quantities of Lechler colour matched paints which could be useful on the basis I suggested of needing, say, a couple of colours to compare 'in the flesh'. If they had to make up a whole number of small quantities to put on swatches no doubt they'd have to charge for that though accordingly. I have no affiliation with this site (which by the way is http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=48 (http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=48)) or Lechler paints ... it was just very useful when I needed some colour matched paint that I could sort out myself with the airbrush I have at home.

Given that Lechler is mentioned quite often on this site in general it may be that someone suitably senior in the Club contacts Lechler for swatches  ???. If this helps a club member make a decision and choose Lechler paint as a result that makes commercial sense for Lechler. As your Blog mentions though, Lechler is not represented in the US so I suspect this is going to be of little use for you personally and so a more univeral company like Glasurit might be a better bet for the Club as a whole.

Title: Re: What colour for my B20

There's a paint supplier that some people I know have used to supply old-style (illegal in the USA if I understand right, though this might be state-by-state rather than federal thing) cellulose paint - Lechler supplier:

Paintshop Products
Unit 37, Youngs Industrial Estate
Aldermaston, Berks, RH7 4PW, UK
sales@paintshop-products.co.uk
+44 (0) 118 98 16216

They could provide liquid paint but you'd need a paintshop to spray it to make sample swatches.  It's possible Paintshop Products could make up aerosols, I've not asked them.

In light of my own B 12 strip down, it appears the Amaranto colour is the B 12s original colour, having seen it on two cars on this thread I'm now minded to re-paint it in its original colour, but time will tell

Original colour will be the way forward for me.

So, it will be nero, solid black. I had considered this some while ago, but discounted it because it is so unforgiving. It shows every imperfection and the even a damp road, let alone a muddy puddle will wreak havoc. However, it was the original colour and will look absolutely superb for the first few moments after being cleaned. So there it is ......... BLACK.

IMHO amaranto is a really good colour for an Aurelia but you need to see one in the flesh to appreciate the hues and depth of colour. Photographs and paint swatches do not do the colour justice.

Checking on the list on page 3, I assume Rosso la Plata is a red type colour, Amaranto being the only other red based colour on the later series B 20s ( who knows what was available on the saloons of year 1955).

So I will have to be certain as to what actually was on mine

The logon details no longer work on the Lechler site, so I registered myself.

On going through 13 pages of colours codes and names I can only see one Amaranto colour listed on their site which pre dates my Aurelia...is this likely to be the colour?

1185   AMARANTO W 2602/3   1930   0  (1930 is start date / 0 is noted in their end column, does this mean they've not stopped using that particular colour or they don't know?)

Which I note is different in code number to that listed for the Ardea and B20....of  - 8027

Ok, slight change of mind, according to the log book, written in Portuguese the colour is listed as "Base Cinsenta", I have a sister-in-law who asked a few native speakers who said this was "colour grey", ergo thats Amaranto out the window!

That being the case can anyone point me in the right direction as to what a solid grey is coded as by Lancia?

I will order samples and post them asap !

By the way, can anyone help me on finding any old registration/history of my B20 *3329* or information about VICTOR RICCI  ;) (http://www.lancia.myzen.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5614.0)

Why not just paint it in its original colour as per the factory build record.
I presume you do have the factory build sheet for your car?
If not P.M. me the chassis and engine numbers and I will get a copy for you.

The deepest darkest red, like a good Barolo or a red from Puglia.
I haven't got any more photos of the B22, which is taken in poor lighting anyway.

I see, this is the code with the up-dated Lechler code number in brackets from Geoff's website

http://blog.lanciainfo.com/?p=442

Amaranto                                          8027 (1176)

I think I can look on the Lechler website to confirm? I must hunt out the password etc

Having logged onto the Lechler site........the bracketed code comes up as  -

1176    BRUNO   1951   (from this year).......meaning a shade of brown? The other number isn't listed.

Popped into my local paint guys who it appears, supply 1/2 the known world with paint aerosols/touch up kits via ebay amongst other things, their items for sale list is over 10000!

Anyways, he checked up on the codes noted above to no avail, bar going through colour swatchs to get something close doesn't enthral me, anyone got any other suggestions?

For the Appia furgoncino, I must admit, I went back to basics. Although I had Lechler codes, I couldn't find any way of cross referencing them for modern paints/colours. I found the colour I wanted and then copied it using a spectro.

I managed to find bits of the original colours (2 tone) on the dash and underside of the bonnet behind the info plates. Once cleaned and polished they gave a good reading. The colours of the resulting paints are indistinguishable from the originals

So, find someone with the original, unfaded colour and analyse it !

Now its been sand blasted and etched, makes it a bit more difficult, but I still have the dashboard but not sure if it was body coloured or in black, will know more on Saturday hopefully.

But I know it was a faded version of the same (Amaranto) from stripping it before, so am pretty happy that the colour will end up a very deep, almost chestnutty red.

The chances of recreating the original colour from something found on a car very much depend on what that colour happens to be. Back then reds basically started to oxidize the moment the paint left the supplier - the chances of finding something to take a match from 60 years on are pretty much nil, and maroon is by far the worst of the reds in this respect. Metallic colours are next, with silver being particularily bad, followed by mid to dark greens and then dark blues. Light colours usually hold up quite well, greys especially.

Yes, understanding all of those points, I'm pretty sure it was Amaranto anyways!

Stupid question so forgive me. Can't Lechler supply colour samples using their original  codes? They did just this for me last year for my project B20 which seemed to have no original paint on it when purchased. I subsequently found some on the back of an internal door trim.

Should also have said that Roberto Pozzi who is Secretary of the Registro Aurelio has a lovely Amaranto B20 which was restored a few years ago. Perhaps he could help.

No, the driver was not Roberto Pozzi, but Gino Valenzano! Roberto Pozzi is a bit younger, as far as I remember...
It is however Roberto's car.

Not entirely sure I'd go down the body colour on the wheels and just stick to the off white colour with the outer rim only in the body colour or whats your B12 like Sebastien?

Frank,
My B12 looks like this. And for the dark colors, I am of the opinion that the wheel interior in beige is nice - but only the interior, not the rim.
Some other Aurelia thread has a long argument about this...

Going back a few years into paint colors - a few thoughts:

We were never able to find a Lechler or Max Meyer cross index to current PPG or Glasurit paints.  As you are in Europe, Lechler can (as Chris says) make samples and that should do the trick. In North America, they were only in Canada and not cooperative. As good as they are (among others), sometimes its a bit confusing: there are a lot of greys and beiges. Amaranto should be simpler, and is a truly lovely color. Pozzi's car is striking.

At one point, an Australian Lechler dealer was willing to make up about 20 of the most common Aurelia colors onto 12" squares, the idea being they could be cut and shared between clubs, etc. However funding didn't emerge, and the idea went nowhere.

The problem with original paint color is that it is really hard to know what it exactly is…. . If you can work with Lechler that should work well, but I've never used them. I once met some body guys in Como who knew how to get old Max Meyer paint. WOrking with these kind of guys should yield good results. Sometimes, a good old time paint guy (Italy?) is your best friend in this.  If you find a sample you like, great.

You'd  think its just "find the number, spray the paint", but sometimes not so easy. One way is to find a sample hidden on your car, away from the light, and that gets you close, but with age, its never exactly so… .I have an old paint chip book, and you could never use it to match the original paint colors - too much time has passed.

Tests matter - even once you find the color. On the B20, we found the right paint color, but then did a number of test pieces with very slight tint shifts, and checked the color in the bright light and in shadow, on the flat and over a curve. Seems silly, but surprisingly it  matters.

Here in the US, most everyone has gone to urethane as their paint system. Its good, and with enough prep work, you can get the depth in the gloss that looks close (but not the same) as lacquer. It is easily blended and matched for repairs, which is nice too. Keep an eye on the gutters, and places where the paint can glom up and get thick.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for insight Geoffrey, just unearthed the dashboard and sure enough under the edge were the main dial is located theres a nice rim of a strong Amaranto colour, you can see how its oxidised/aged on other slightly more exposed parts, so pretty confident we can get it as near to as possible, test cards will be done up over the next couple of weeks, agreed its a lovely colour when done well and freshly!

Onwards and upwards!

But not original I am afraid. I think it matters a lot but of course it's up to the owner. And it's more demanding of the paint shop too.

Update:

When last visited, the "original colors" were listed as being available through Lechler, but nowhere else. Now it seems that Glasurit is also making vintage paint colors. Its a bit tricky to navigate, but you can get the paint formulas from the Glasurit Classic Car Center - http://www.glasurit.com/uk/node/1744, and then hit "color online" in the upper right. You then choose your paint, although there are different versions of the same color listed.

So too, Lechler now has it so you can get spray cans of their colors and check it out - still not available in the US. A friend might try to get the same colors from both and see how they match up. No idea if their version of "original" is really right or not. And as Chris points out, watch out for the sheen.
For the Lechler list, go to - http://explorer.lechler.it/Home/tabid/36/language/en-US/Default.aspx
Register, and then login. A rather substantial list of vintage Lancia paints comes up, with current numbers, although no paint formulas. Here's a screen shot of some of the paints. More info at: http://blog.lanciainfo.com/?p=2276

Thanks for the extra research, advice and opinions guys, all highly valued.

I will have a chat with my paint guy this week, hes using a premium brand, will likely go down the final flatting option most likely, given that getting it precisely correct isn't truly doable.

This is very useful, and it is possible to get to the formulas - click on the paint chosen and another screen giving the various types e.g. "hydrofan topcoat" or "basecoat"etc.  Click on one of these and you get a screen like this -

This has been a very useful thread and the link to Glasurit is helpful.
I managed to get a list of 49 Lancia colours for 1950-1960 from this website.  Twelve of the colours listed do not have a code but most of the others have a code for which the last 3 digits are the same as the last three digits on the Max Meyer swatch from the 1960-1970s, which appears on Geoff Goldberg's blog: see image attached MM-Swatch 1960-70.jpg

I have had access to this swatch and have scanned all the colour chips and recorded the information on the reverse, along with much other information on the attached pdf file "Colour Reference Table", which I did for my own use, but feel I should share, if only to get more information.  Please note it is a work "in progress" and of course the colours are only approximate.

An example of the old Max Meyer colour and the new Glasurit one is Grigio Bettole.
The Max Meyer chip is code 2.272.8502 nitro acrylic and the 2015 Glasurit code is 10502 with a date range 1953-1963.  Lechler also currently supply this colour as code NF 8080, although they have a date range 1956-1962.

More in the next message about my car.

Title: Re: What colour for my B20 - B20-3609
Post by: Zetaman on 19 February, 2015, 07:30:45 PM
I am at last getting moving with my B20 which last moved under its own power about 1980 and have been puzzled about its colour.

The Lancia production log says "Beige" with "Panno Nocciola" interior - which it has.  However I knew that my father had had the car resprayed at Lancia (England) Limited, after other work in 1961, and I had assumed it was the still in the original colour, particularly as everywhere was the same colour.

When, years ago, I was able to see a Max Meyer colour swatch, it was clear that the colour of the car was Grigio Marones - see chip Grigio Marones-MM-1.272.8004.jpg. Indeed, so sure was I, that Geoff Goldberg has included reference to my car on his blog.

Recently I bought a spray can on eBay (www.profiautolacke.de (http://www.profiautolacke.de) of the Lechler colour NF8021 Grigio marones and it is a very close match to the old paint on the interior parts of my car.

But all the while I was troubled as to what "beige" really means, and Grigio marones seems rather grey, if light a light one.

So not realising my ignorance, and not having a colour chip to look at, I ordered another can, this time Lechler NF 1077-1080 Beige Avana Chiaro W2510.  Nowhere near - a medium brown.  I can supply sprayed samples of metal/card of these colours if you are interested. [Will add sample shortly to my table]

I then started to look more carefully at the parts from my car and found that the paint on the internal windscreen surround was flaking off, underneath showing a shiny surface in a much warmer colour - more of a beige to me and like a number of cars I have seen.
Then I realised I might see more of this colour, if it had been resprayed a different colour, by removing the little mouldings by the air-vents.  This did the trick.
Luckily I was able to look at the Max Meyer swatch again, and the colour is almost certainly Grigio Bettole as described in the previous message. [chip Grigio Bettole-MM-2.272.8502.jpg]

I am now feeling that this part of the investigation is almost done and my conclusions feel "right", plus the colour is available.  But this does show that there is a strong subjective element to these decisions.

Paul -
This is wonderful. I have some Glasurit sheets - they aren't paint chips, more like swatches. Would they be of use to you? You've put together a fantastic structure to coordinate this information, which has for so long been hard to track. Thanks for this, great work.
