Title: 1600 REBUILD PICS
Post by: zagatoboy on 28 August, 2011, 10:40:33 AM
Well I finally found a way to reduce my photo's, they aren't very good a sI only used my phone but you can see the state of the so called rebuilt engine with broken head bolt and one was missing totally, also broken piston ring which to be fair if you just hammer them in or try and use one of those ring compressor tools you'll break them anyway.
Brian, you can see the result of the honing tool and also the result of the gasflowing to the head and inlet manifold which i had to have done after snapping a stud off which i could not remove, just fitted my original cromodora's after having them restored.
Next job brakes, will remove all callipers and have them sent away to 'Biggred' who do a lovely job on restoring them and fit new disc's if I can't reface them also thinking of having the carbs rebuilt and restored just to finish it off, i seem to be getting a bit of starvation when accelerating which i think could be carb related, we never used to rebuild carbs, we used the carb centre in London for that and i think they've gone now, there is a place in Watford called Gower and lee that seem to do a nice job? anyone got any suggestions?

And the gas flowed bits, this has to be done VERY carefully on 1600's, and now sitting on her Refurbed Cromodora's!

Headwork was done by Ken Riley engineering in High Wycombe, they used to do our work on Lancia's back in the 70s and 80s so they know them well as it's the same engineers, they do take their time but do a very nice job.

Tony,

Thanks. Looks really good. Did you just fit new standard shells, ends and mains - or did you go undersized?

Who did you work with all those years ago to gain so much useful experience?

Colin

Gower & lee at Watford must do something right as I remember them from the 1960's! there's also a carb specialist at Leighton Buzzard but I can't remember the name off hand, I seem to remember someone on here saying they are usually very busy and it takes months to get your carbs back, although if you can afford to wait they do a good job.
The honing tool certainly looks as though it did a good job.

Colin, I used all standard shells and rings as the crank and bores were perfect, I used to work for Nigel Hargreaves HF Automotive in the late 70s early 80s, I was brought up on Fulvia's (And all the other models) from general servicing to full rebuilds. Lots of fond memories of Harry Manning and Barry Waterhouse.
Brian, spoke to Gower and Lee and looking at six weeks lead time so they are also very busy.

Rebuilding Solex 42DDHF carbs etc.

I recently contacted Gower and Lee about rebuilding a pair of 42s for the 1600HF.   Yes, they knew exactly what to do, but said they were so busy, turn-round time would be 10 - 12 weeks!   So I Emailed Gabiele David of Italian Carburetors, Corlo, Ferrara, Italy - eBay shop Alfa1750s   (I have previously bought Solex jets and etc. from the firm - they can supply almost any size).   20 minutes later he replied, basically saying that if there are no fractures, anything can be done to these carbs to reinstate them to as new.   English seems to be understood and well written.   The firm have a contract with UPS too.

The parcel was uplifted from my house;  3 days later delivered to Corlo, and the machining work started on the day of receipt.   It was completed the next day, and the parcel despatched back to me the following day.

Absolutely superb job :-  Ultrasonic clean;  mounting flange faced;  new bushes for spindles;  choke lightly machined for roundness;  new spindles, butterflies, and setscrews.   It was my choice to strip the carbs to the bare body only, but I suspect if I had sent the complete units, there may well have been new diaphragms and float jets fitted too - (I ordered them separately).   Plus they look like new.   There charges were also very reasonable, and paid through PayPal.

I can only strongly recommend the firm - have a look at their eBay shop to see what is there for sale.   Needless to say, the car engine is now performing superbly as well.

Regards - Roddy

Hello Tony

Thanks for letting me know.   I hope you will be as satisfied with the service as I was.   The quick turn-round and the charges involved I thought were a major bonus.

Send me a pm if you would like a copy of the latest edition of the "Zagato Register - Fulvia Sport" in PDF - all 29 pages.

Regards - Roddy

Hi Roddy

Thanks for posting, I had given up trying to find someone who would re-bush my carb spindles after looking last year.

Off on holiday now, but will be sending them off on my return.

Nick
