Title: Jay Kay's 037
Post by: Paul Greenway on 04 March, 2011, 08:25:54 AM
I see Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay has just purchased an 037 Rallye Stradale (my favourite Lancia and first purchase when my lottery numbers come up) at auction for a whopping £172K.

I wonder if he will join the LMC or CLS?

Can you ask him to come to Brooklands too in April?  ;)

I think Trevor Nicosia will know it - he lives pretty close to him.  Send a pm to Nyssa on this very forum

I should have read this thread before I responded to Chris! I've sent Chris JK's address and will now be looking out for the 037 running up and down our lane  8)

Trevor, if you should see him in your lane, ask him if he joins the club I might be able to arrange get him to have a run up the Brooklands Test Hill or test circuit at the April Auto Italia meeting  ;D

He does the Kop Hill climb in Princes Risborough (August time) in many of his toys, but he's also off touring in March & April so may be too busy for Brooklands

He has had cars featured in Auto Italia before, but anonymously! I once saw a 50s Maserati in his garage and knew I'd seen it before. Found the relevant issue which was very cagey about who owned it, but the pictures were taken in his grounds

I saw him in Risborough yesterday driving a classic old shape Audi quattro coupe, also i was told he's just bought a heavily modified integrale but this may be the 037

Did he definitely buy it?

"With auctioneer and former racing driver Maître Hervé Poulain wielding the gavel, the second major sale held by the new department Artcurial Motorcars (created by Matthieu Lamoure in spring 2010), took place on 4 February at the Rétromobile Salon in Paris. The results for this young team were outstanding with a $10.77-million sale total, 80% of all lots selling, and several world records broken – all taking place in the heightened atmosphere of a saleroom packed with over 2,000 people, for the eight hours of sales.

The auction, held in two parts, started with 123 lots of automobilia, which included 25 lots from the personal collection of Hervé Poulain. Highlight of this collection was the painting Le Pilote Bleu by Géo Ham, a striking gouache which achieved a record price of $198,195 (estimate $27,262 - 40,893); another gouache by the same artist, a futurist study of speed, sold for $95,555 (estimate $13,361 - 27,262). The sculpture by César, Venturi 600 LM, was bought for $26,035 by the Musée du Sport who had the right of first refusal on this item.

The five-hour sale of Collectors’ cars attracted particular interest for the large number of cars from private collections that were fresh to the market. Highlights included:

• 1937 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante (lot 215) - sold for $790,598
• 1931 Invicta Type LS 4.5-litre (lot 256) - bought by a US bidder for $729,259
• 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL  Roadster - sold for $568,413
• 1953 Citroën 2 CV, a rare early model – changed hands for $20,855

Several world records were achieved, notably:

• 1983 Lancia Rallye 037 Stradale which sold for $302,063 after a fierce battle between two bidders – one on the telephone and one in the room
• 1973 Lamborghini 400 GT Espada which doubled its estimate, selling for $98,066
• 1902 De Dion Bouton Type K1 which changed hands for $177,203 (estimate $74,971 – 115,864)

Finally, other moments of excitement in the sale were provided by the singer Jay Kay, from Jamiroquai, who bought the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE for $259,398. Towards the end of the sale, General de Gaulle’s 1960 Simca was bought by a French enthusiast for $160,709 who declared that the car would stay in France, drawing a loud round of applause. A few lots later, the 1960 Zil Type 111 used by Khrushchev was secured by a bidder for $302,372, who plans to take the car back to Russia. The ex-President Giscard d’Estaing 1974 Citroën DS 23, also from the same museum collection sold for $51,389. "

I spoke to a chap today who looks after a  couple of 037s and wanted parts for an 037 Evo 2. He also seemed pretty convinced that JK had bought an 037 and was hoping for an introduction. Haven't seen it yet, and he's on tour for the next few weeks so doubt I'll see him for a while, but I will check with him next time I see him. He knows I'm Lancisti so surprised he hasn't already dropped by in it - unless he hasn't actually got it back home yet

One of those 'If only I'd kept it' moments!  ::)

In the 80s I bought a very nice Ferrari 250 GTE for £3000 and ran it almost as an every day car for 5 years. When it needed the V12 engine rebuilding I couldn't justify the £4000 cost so sold it for £3000!  :o

Picture shows it heading for the Goodwood chicane. The smoke from the exhausts was caused by worn valve guides which cost £800 to replace.

If I had to choose one of the many cars I have owned as my all time favourite it would probably just about shade Modestine but please don't tell her!   :-[

Ahhh........ happy days!  :)

Robin

Small world,I was in Risborough at the outlaws 3 weeks ago (under protest), and what was parked around the corner from the library in the high street, but the very same type car, but in black, it was superb, did'nt realise it was such a big car, much bigger than the Flavia coupe which looks similar at a quick glance.

Apparently, he did not buy it and bid for it, but was beaten by someone who REALLY wanted it, hence the price
Wish I had bought one when they were £35K... :'(

Yeah Paul, we talked about this at the GNW, if only back in early 2005 I had purchased a B20GT and 037 Rallye Stradale (subject to availability as they seldom come up for sale)for £30k & £50k respectively rather than my 328GTS & F355 Spyder i'd certainly have had a much bigger smile on my face.
