Title: integrale Ignition Broken
Post by: sparehead3 on 18 September, 2010, 07:34:28 PM
Hi All,

Went to and from RallyDay today , returned home went to put the integrale in the garage and as I turned the key in the ignition I heard a snap and the key just turned :( (All the dash lights were on in pre-start mode). So it looks like something has snapped in the barrel ? I took it all off and got the car in the garage :)

The question is : is it going to be something the plastic bit the key goes into ? How do I get it out of the metal bit ? and are all ignitions the same on Deltas , integrales and specifically Evos ?

Any advice from anyone that's had to deal with the appeciated : the tell tale sign this year that it was on the way out was that the parking lights would come on if the key wasn't removed in the right way !

Steve

Hi Steve,

I've rebuilt Beta ignitions which are probably similar, and in these it's the plastic which finally goes brittle from heat fatigue.

I spent a lot of time creating a an AutoCAD sold model of the one plastic bit, and was about to have it 'built' by one of those rapid-protyping services (quite costly) then decided to us QBond cyanoacrylate glue and (black) powder to repair it.

Stripping it is fiddly (drilling out rivets & push pins, cutting off wires, losing minute springs ::) etc.) then shaping it post repair with needle files - I'm mad, I know!

I'd suggest you rather check Eper for a Panda or such-like equivalent to buy new from your Fiat dealer.

Regards,

Thanks for that information Guy. I shall see whether anyone has a second hand one I think :)

I've found the cause of the problem , the barrel(?) (that what the key pokes into) had snapped off two little pegs at the end and so I guess the whole the was just rotating. Managed to get the barrel bit out (by twisting the key and poking a little catch in the main body of the ignition). Fortunately a trip over to Andy's place revealed his donor delta still had the key in the ignition and a quick swap of the parts has got mine working again :) Deep joy and it didn't cost anything (except a pint and some pork scratchings for Andy)
