Title: number stamps
Post by: dhla40 on 30 August, 2010, 04:56:08 PM
I have S2 and S3 coupes and have just noticed that a number stamped in the gutter of the RH front wing near the radiator does not match the chassis number on both cars.  Does this mean A, I have two ringers :o,B, both cars have had a wing change, or C, this number is some kind of factory reference mark.

No that's the part number of the panel.
The chassis number should be in the bonnet drain channel in front of the windscreen, although a lot of them over the years have been filled and painted over in the course of a rebuild/respray. Sometimes it's possible to see the chassis number by looking up from underneath the channel with a mirror.
We went through this though process of "OMG" is it a ringer? while trying to find the chassis number on a friends Series 2 Coupe recently imported from South Africa.
I've also been unable to find the chassis number in this position on my 2c Berlina.
If the chassis number on the vin plate and the engine number match the V5 I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks Brian thats a relief, the S2 I am restoring has been off the road for ten years and if I ever get to MOT it I had visions of an annoying 'computer sez no' situation ;D

Sean,
Should be interesting to see what reaction the DVLA have, as we have to take it for an inspection soon to get a UK registration.
I would have thought if your Fulvia is on Sorn then it shouldn't be a problem anyway.

It is on SORN but has not had a computerised MOT so I think I will put a skim of filler over the number in case it is spotted and becomes an issue.
