Title: Auto Italia
Post by: Kevin MacBride on 15 April, 2010, 02:03:57 PM
Dunno has anyone seen the recent edition of Auto Italia. There is a letter from Fransesco Gandolfo (sp ?), he was not too complimentary about a recent article on Lancia in the mag, even Adam Tindalls car came in for a bashing !!  Hope he never gets to see my B20, I think I washed it...ONCE !!

i saw it, if i'm honest i think its a bit of a "poor show" slating someone elses car in a magazine like that, i didn't read it all after seeing what he had to say and sympathise with the owner of the car, there are many none imaculate lancia's on the road including some of mine but atleast they're on the road ! i wish our B20 was on the road it wouldnt matter to me if it was a pile of rust with gaffer tape stuck all over it i'd still be driving it!! ;D

I haven't seen the letter but it seems a bit rich - the standard of cars, and the enthusiasm for them, in this club is IMHO very high.  And its supposed to be fun, not a perpetual concours competition.  If someone wants to forward me a copy I'll gladly respond on behalf of the club, and its members.

What seemed to irritate him the most was that Adams car (to him) was not the correct colour, and had the 'wrong' wheels. I would have thought if he really loved Lancias he would be happy to see the cars preserved, and used, in whatever condition the owner desired.

Fransesco Gandolfo sometimes writes into Viva Lancia about Owners cars that he considers to be wrong, or not what they should be; always seems a bit rude to me, to criticise something belonging to someone else, because you don't like it, particularly when it's done publicly in print.
Although I do believe he is a bit on the passionate side for authenticity.

"Fransesco Gandolfo sometimes writes into Viva Lancia about Owners cars that he considers to be wrong"

I wish I had that sort of time on my hands.....

Wonder what his motivation/objective is? ???

myself and dad always say the same thing, up to and including appia's there is NO right or wrong!! these cars were hand built and many parts used were simply just what was available at the time. It infuriates me when you get "know it alls " who really know little but try to show their authority, 1 example is my fathers augusta, according to a certain italian it was a fake lusso as it didn't have the draft excluder glass at the tops of the door glass and it has early alloy door handles, he had convinced a fellow lmc member that our car had been converted and that the lusso type moulding must have been added at a later date, now i bare metaled the car and all the mouldings are pressed into the body from the factory, my augusta doesnt have draft excluders and is completely origional, the door handles on my fathers car are its origionals so it shows how little these type of people really know, i am the sort who would far prefere to see the cars on the road with "whatever" parts rather than sitting in a shed or a field, i meen my god what would he make of my pickup or my dads astura  :D , my dads astura fooled the italians in turin in 2006 as did robins dilambda yet niether have their origional bodies yet in my opinion are both far better cars with the bodies they now have, there we go rant over and blood slowely coming off the boil lol  ;)

Pending sight of the letter, I've drafted a response.  Chugga - thanks for your post, that was useful in shaping parts of this.

Oops, hope I havn't opened a hornets nest. Peter Harding once referred to my car (when in the ownership of the late Barrie Crowe), that it was a Series 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 B20, with bits of Citroen thrown in for good measure. I'd better not bring it to Italy anytime soon....

We're damn lucky in the UK not to have listed building type regulations for cars.  For all Mr Clarkson may rant we're a lot more free than most.

I'd imagine at this stage that most, if not all early Lancias have had work done on them at some stage. It's a bit like Lincolns Axe, 'Completly original, apart from 3 new handles, and 2 new heads....'

As the proud owner of the B20 in question, I thought it time to pick up on this.

I have not seen the letter in question and not sure I can be bothered to.

His opinion (valid or otherwise) is irrelevant to my enjoyment of the car and my continued willingness to support the LMC if asked to again in the future.

I'm happy to leave it to the LMC to formally respond on behalf of all the four members who they asked to help promote Lancia and our club in the publication concerned.

Following discussion at Committee, this matter has now been dealt with in a manner that both the committee and Adam are happy with.  We have sought not to fan the flames any further, but have sought to protect the good name of the club.  If anyone wants to know more I'm happy to PM.

Just wanted to publicly thank the Committee for handling this so appropriately and also say cheers to all the members who offered their support on the forum and at Brooklands on Saturday.  Good to know that the LMC has nice people as well as nice cars.
