Title: Made in Ireland !!
Post by: Kevin MacBride on 29 January, 2010, 01:48:54 PM
I grew up in a place known as 'The Works'. It was (still is) in Dublin, and was for many years where most railway engines and rolling stock were made in Ireland from the 1800's till today. It emcompassed a large area and had its own housing estates, school, shops etc. Down through the years they had 'open days', very few, but they gave the locals a chance to see what their respective family members had been up to behind the closed gates during working hours.
I was at one back in 1969 and remember seeing armoured cars on display. Long since gone, but I'm sure these photos will be of interest.

They were on a site called Dublin.ie A forum for all things Dublin. It has a transport section with lots of old photos. I think one of these vans ended up in the Transport Museum in Belfast. I have some old books which contain other photos of the build, but its difficult to make out whats what in them.
