Title: New London Area Meeting
Post by: HPEHF on 18 May, 2009, 06:14:25 PM
Mark Blackburn and Martin Dowling are starting a new London meeting to be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Ace Cafe on the North Circular Road NW10 7UD to coincide with their Italian Night to
get around the 3 people in the pub senario.

For more information on the Ace Cafe check out their website on www.ace-cafe-london.com or to contact Martin or Mark send a message or email me and I will pass on details.

Well done Simon, Mark and Martin! A really welcome initiative - I’ll try to get there. And for us north Londoners, the Essex meeting is not far away.

Hi Tim, do you have a retro-trip in your HF and if so could you let me have the three figures in the display as I need to calibrate mine and need a start point. Many thanks in advance.

It was good to be at the Ace Café this evening and to meet up with Mark Blackburn and Martin Dowling who had the bright idea of using the Café as a venue for a regular LMC gathering.

We were a bit overwhelmed by other Italian cars and motorbikes, but hopefully there will be more Lancias in the future.

Here’s a picture of my car looking small in the company of more modern Italians:

I like the "Ace" and have attended a number of classic meets there, besides my time there with motorbikes in the 1950's, ( rumoured to have been, who could get to the Neasden circus roundabout and back quickest, supposed to have been before the record on the jukebox finished, but I can't ever remember achieving it, and many who tried were killed trying to take the bend at the Iron Bridge :'()
Only about 30+ miles so I'll try and make it, when's next?

Good to meet Martin and Mark last night at the ace, excellent venue, shame only three Lancia's turned up, hopefully next month we can get a better turn out.
Enjoyed the drive down the A40 in convoy with Jay Kay in his beautiful old Ferrari something, it was on an old A reg 1963/4 ? he was admiring the Fulvia and the pair sounded fantastic together.
Look forward to next month.

Christmas is over, it's the New Year, a new month, which means next Thursday (14th Jan) we'll be back at the Ace (well I will anyway!) subject to ice, snow, salt etc...

Looks like reasonable weather for tomorrow, so I'll be there. Don't be shy.

reasonable as in snow ?

Title: Re: New London Area Meeting
Post by: Martin D on 10 February, 2010, 07:52:22 PM
Hi Carlos / Joanna,

No, that would be completely unreasonable given the amount of snow we've already had.

Unless you live in Dover or Norwich, the expectation is for no snow, cold yes, but snowless ! So I still plan to be there.

Of course it could all change.

Snow or not, I’m not tempted to attend. I’ll wait for evening spring sunlight to illuminate the otherwise dull, dark car park and hopefully some fine cars.

See you then chaps,

Colin

Yep , just take a look outside my window in sunny, oops I mean snowy Romford in Essex  8)

The weather has been so bad that mine is on SORN for the first time in 4 years !!
I also understand what Colin says, event though it is an iconic place, the car park is quite dark and dingy, they need to sort out the lights there.

I take your point, but it's not only about being in the car park, it's meant to be a social thing too.

Conversely, I have always found it odd that at most other regional meets everyone is inside the pub talking and hardly any time is spent looking at the cars!
(Which is part of the reason we went for the Ace, to get around the two lonely blokes in the pub scenario.)

However, looks like it might be just me and a plate of sausage, egg, chips, beans, mushrooms, fried bread, tomatoes, hash browns, two slices of bread and butter and a mug of tea tonight.

Martin.

Just to let everyone know that Martin and I WON'T be at the Ace next week as we'll both be attending the wedding of a revered Lancisti (can that be in the singular?) near Turin... but do go along anyway and fly the flag - there's bound to be some nice Italian motors, there always are.. and no, I wasn't imagining the lime green De Tomaso Mangusta...

Yes it's that time of the month again and definitely taking the Hyena, which is just back from a muddy weekend in the Cotswolds/Prescott.

Mmmm, it's not snowing, no salt on the road, not half-term - maybe some other Lancisti might just show up for the Italian Car Night at the Ace Cafe tomorrow night? I'll be there about 8pm but alas Hyena won't be - it's in France. And no, it's not the one for sale - that's K721DHN - mine WAS K236DHN.

Oh, and Mark's lime green Mangusta does exist, photographed at Brooklands Auto Italia.

Six Lancias graced the ACE this evening and in their subtle way showed the various Fiats, Alfas and Masers what real auto-engineering is all about. Well anyway, I saw it that way.

Dave Gee’s Flaminia Sport took pride of place, but right at the back of the car park was this wonderful Beta Coupe seemingly without a proud owner.

This Thursday will be the second of the month - which means we're back at the Ace Cafe for Italian Car Night and hoping to improve on the good turnout (quantity AND quality) last month. We usually get there between 7.30 & 8 - hoping to take the Hyena if overheating problems don't re-occur. (Seemed fine on trial run just now)
Do come along for the last real summer one - there'll be plenty to look at as well as Lancias and the beer (I mean Pepsi) is cheap as well as the food!
Mark

Post by: Martin D on 07 September, 2010, 10:40:58 AM
Colin,

Don't want to be picky but actually the official report reads SEVEN Lancias as a yellow Beta Spider turned up after you had gone.

Dave Gee's Flaminia Sport is indeed really lovely but let's not overlook other very interesting cars; nice to see Mike Matthews Agnelli integrale back out & about, how many times do you see a Hyena on the road in the UK? and I suspect your modesty forbids but (in my opinion) your own Fulvia Sport is one of the best around!

The point here is we are now getting good numbers of members with a good spread of cars and if anyone hasn't yet been to the Ace, (worth a visit in itself) then do it this week.

See you all there !

Martin.

It's tomorrow night, Thursday 14th from 7.30ish.

We had a good turn out last month including 3 integrales, and good to see Richard Carr made it all the way from the south west !

So if you want to sample the food before you book for Christmas, see you tomorrow.

Thanks for the reminder, but sorry to say I have to be at a boring committee meeting so I won’t be there to savour the delights of the autumn evening light and bonhomie of the Ace Cafe car park.

Hope it goes well.

erm, that's not strictly true, Martin!

Good to meet up with yourself, Mark, Mike and Vernon again.
Also nice to see a Trevi in the car park. Apparently the owner's name was Theo (hope I got that right!).

Apparently the owner's name was Theo (hope I got that right!).

Yes that's right  ;) I was there in the Trevi adding to the very low Lancia turnout numbers (I made it just 3? Integrale, Monte and Trevi) even though I was there with some Fiat friends who both turned up in yellow 124 Sport Coupes (first series-AC and second series-BC).  Sorry I didn't get to speak to you guys; I just had a quick chat on my way out with Mark (? I think - I am bad with names....). I think the Alfas had the best turnout last night although the Fiats were close - I couldn't be bothered to count. There was a lovely little white Autobianchi A112 which I suppose it's the predecessor to the Lancia Ypsilon so maybe we can count that as another Lancia  ;) ;D

Apologies again for being seemingly unsociable but I didn't know who any of you were and I think I was the only one wearing a Lancia T-Shirt? I promise to bore you with my chatting next time....  ;D

Ehhh Richard, but which bit's not true? there WERE 3 integrales, you ARE from the south west, and you WERE there!!

Sorry to have missed you Theo, perhaps you can make it next month? and to the xmas do?? You're right it's a pity there were only 3 Lancia cars but there were 6 people.

Martin.

and good to see Richard Carr made it all the way from the south west !

.......sort of gives the impression I actually drove up from the South-West (home) to London for the Meeting. Truly above and beyond the call of duty! I only had to drive from Wokingham. A lot closer, I think you'll agree.
Other than that, correct on all counts.

Having a LANCIA table-flag is definitely an idea worth pursuing, so as to avoid further "where are you?" moments.

Richard.

I do like the Ace as a meeting place, but I do wish they would do something about the abysmal lighting, particularly as they advertise it as the place to come and see the cars.
Something not that easy on a winters night.

sorry Martin :(

It really is very important in running a local meeting that new attendees are able to identify you and are made welcome. Back in the early 90's I went to my nearest local meet, was completely ignored by the not insignificant number of members there, and never went back again.

How about the organise(s) putting a sign on their dashboard with their mobile phone number so new attendees can track down the Lancia group?

Title: Re: New London Area Meeting
Post by: Martin D on 22 October, 2010, 01:31:09 PM
Frank, I've already got the Lancia table flag sorted, but good idea about the mobile numbers. In practice there's a lot of hanging around outside at the Ace, (actually looking at cars!! very unusual for an LMC regional meet) so we tend to catch most people ... well usually.

I'll see what I can do about the lights Brian.

Martin.

Well done you for taking on the Competition Secretary role.

Yes, it's that time of the month again - where we all get a bit grumpy and irritable because it's winter and we haven't got our cars out. But this Thursday (10th) is Italian Car night at the Ace Cafe, North Circular, so the LMC London Group will be there from 8pm - find us at a table inside graced by Martin Dowling's wonderfully original Lancia totem, or outside wandering around looking at the Fiats, Alfas and hopefully a few Lancias.

Who knows, if the weather stays like this, we might even get Colin Marr out in his Fulvia Zagato!

Any queries get in touch with Mark (07768 605700) or Martin (01494 772424 daytime)

Mark,

Thanks. I have had the Fulvia out on a longish run last week - lovely it was too. But some roads in Muswell Hill were salted again last night and I may not take it out again until we have had a bit more nice warm rain to wash it away.

I may have to give this meeting a miss, but hope to be there and to see you all in March.

It's that time of the month again Lancisti and if the weather's like it is now you really have no excuse! We're even expecting a few more Lancias from an alternative source  ;)
8pm this Thursday at the Ace Cafe and I'd really like some company as Martin's celebrating an extremely significant birthday with Mrs D. Now why they don't both want to come and join us for a burger and a pint of John Smith's at the Ace I have no idea....

A great turn out last month with 6 cars (I think) of considerable variety & quality (thanks all) - let's see if we can better that this month! It's supposed to be a little cooler, but rain should have passed through... and it will be LIGHT when we get there!
So, just as a reminder, Thurs 14th April, 8ish (but get there a bit earlier if you want to be guaranteed a space, was full last month!) at Italian Car Night at the Ace Cafe on the Nth Circular nr Park Royal exits.

Yes, two Zagato bodied Lancias parked side by side at the glorious Ace. See photo below of Mark’s Hyena and my Fulvia. A yellow Integrale owned by Terry from Suffolk was also present to enrich the car park, which was mostly dominated by Fiat.

PS. I forgot to mention that there were lots of Alfas there too!

Thanks for coming Colin, Terry and (ex-owner) Simon. Surprisingly with the better weather and the longer evening, numbers were actually down - not just Lancia, but overall - there was actually room in the car park all evening. Next time: Thurs 9th June.

They do look good togeather.

An interesting case of the reverse was when I was giving sanctuary to an S1 Fulvia Coupe on the drive (a friend I still dare not name hadn't "declared" it at home) next to my (now departed...) SIII B20 Aurelia, both in red, and each looked better when the other was moved away.

Maybe they shouldn't have sat Eugene and Beatrice next to each other at The Wedding?

A few changes;

Mark has stepped down as coordinator for London region but I'm carrying on.

The general lack of attendance during the winter months combined with/because of the bad lighting in the car park leads me to think we should go into hibernation until an April re-launch so there will be no formal meet this thursday, although Italian Night at the Ace still continues.

However, I would like to carry on with the christmas tradition, (after all it's been around now for at least a couple of thousand years) and suggest we meet at The Belvedere Italian restaurant just down the road at Hanger Lane Gyratory in mid december, date to be confirmed.

What do people think of that? any takers for a nice christmas do? I'll arrange a sensibly priced menu.

Anyone have any thoughts for a different meeting venue / weekend? during the winter months?

Martin Dowling.

i hope nothing nasty has happened to disuade anyone from driving lancias in town.however the day is for doing and the night is for sleeping so i have heard and a policy which i practice. so could there be there any interest in [weather permitting] daytime picnics/inexpensive snacks followed by 'do your own thing' at venues in the SE area[70% of membership i am informed] at weekends or weekdays[probably difficult]  perhaps at public motoring/vintage/antique fairs/special interest/exibitions type events[preferably family friendly]-and there are plenty around.perhaps a forum section  open to suggestions and responses would be good.i guess area co ordinators have sometimes worked hard with unreliable responses so this could be a chance to organise a social without any one person being responsible for making such a day a success.and perhaps a proper welcome should be extended to newcomers until they are established at such events as i have noticed in many social enviroments the onus has been upon the newcomer to be assertive so as to access the circle.best regards richard

Martin,
You know my views already on the subject of lighting, or the lack of it at the Ace during the winter, so I think it's a good move to leave visiting the Ace until the lighter nights return.
I'm up for a Christmas do as suggested.
Probably a bit far out, but sunday lunch at the Pub the Alfa boys use at London Colney where we have visited them, would do nicely.
If anyone fancies a bit of a run, Wrest Park, English Heritage where I volunteer is open saturdays and sundays right through the year this winter for the first time, we have a very nice Cafe, gift shop and if you don't mind the kids getting frost bite, a great childrens play area with a zip wire.
Car parking is in the walled garden, and unless you want to visit the house and 92 acres of garden it's all free, it's even better if you're a member of English Heritage as you get in the house & garden free anyway.
We could also fit in the Motor Museum at Lower Stondon with it's varied, and sometimes odd collection!

Martin,

I am slow to pick up on this – sorry. I think you are right to forget about the Ace for the winter months. Whatever virtues the Ace has, they are not at their best on dark cold evenings.

Thinking about a Christmas tradition, I worry a bit about the Belvedere at Hanger Lane Gyratory (a location that some of us would pay to avoid!), although if others are in favour then I’ll keep quiet. But I am more tempted by Brian’s suggestion of a lunch at the London Colney pub, which is easy to get to from north London and lunchtimes might be easier for me..

Colin

When I said yes to Christmas I missed the bit about the Hanger lane Gyratory :o
I hate going around there at the best of times, besides which how long it will take you to reach that point, from whichever direction your coming from, is highly problematic ???

Would be up for the Belvedere, or would go elsewhere if Hangar Lane proves too much of a Death Row. Let's get a date sorted soon before Christmas gets cluttered!

Come on Brian and Colin, I'm not suggesting Hanger Lane at 8.30 on a Monday morning!  it's only a few hundred yards from the Ace which has never presented an access problem. There is a tube station just opposite the restaurant too.

Given the lack of time, I don't anticipate a referendum on which restaurant (do i look Greek?) [apologies to Theo] but if somebody has a good suggestion for a restaurant IN LONDON make it quickly. (it is the LONDON region after all).

More importantly, if anyone else is interested in joining us please let me know asap so I can sort out dates/numbers/menus etc, even if it is an "in principle" interest.

Martin.

I had hoped to talk to you about it last week at our meet at the rusty gun, but as you didn't come I couldn't, just let me know when and where & if I can I'll be there.

Martin,

OK, I did say "I worry a bit about the Belvedere ... although if others are in favour then I’ll keep quiet". So, let me know when and I'll try to be there, full of Xmas cheer!

Thanks for doing it,

Colin

Theo and Colin, thanks very much, and yes I concede your point Colin.

So it's Wednesday 7th December 8.00pm at the Belvedere, £28.50 for 3 courses and coffee, or £22 for a vegetarian version.

Please let me know definite numbers asap.

Martin.

OK, please count me in!

It might be that I choose to travel by tube, but does anyone know what car parking is like at the Belvedere?

Colin

Colin,

I'm checking the parking situation and will post here soon but I know there is reasonable parking in front of the parade of shops where the restaurant is.

Martin.

Dear All,

Please send me your menu choices asap, all listed on the Belvedere xmas menu, see earlier link.

http://www.ristorantebelvedere.co.uk/

Colin, there is parking right outside the Belvedere parade of shops/restaurants and free parking in the side streets round the corner (Twyford Abbey Road area) after 5pm.

Still a chance for those who haven't booked yet !

Martin.

The London Area Christmas dinner at the Belvedere was delightful. Thanks to Martin and Libby for getting it all together. Never again will I think of the Hanger Lane Gyratory System with such horror!

To cap it all I had the pleasure of a lift home, driven by Theo in his lovely Gamma Coupe S2 – see photo below. Thanks again Theo.

I second that. Great company and great food in a very friendly and welcoming place. What more could we want.

Thanks to Martin and Libby for getting it all together.

And I most certainly second that. Thank you very much Libby and Martin for organising such a great evening. You do realise that you'll now become the official London area LMC social event organisers  ;) :D

You are most welcome Colin. And thank you very much again Colin for the Panettone.
