Title: Rear end clonking
Post by: simonpen on 09 August, 2021, 09:21:14 AM
Now that I am driving my S1 after its 'restoration' I am bothered by a loud and regular 'clonk' from the rear when going over pot-holes and bumps in the road. All the rubber in the rear was replaced and new shox installed. I have emptied the boot. Is the exhaust prone to swaying about? If I grab hold of the rear pipe it seems pretty well located.  Any suggestions? I think I remember the same affliction on my previous Coupe.

Although you've had all the bushes replaced it would still be a good idea to have it in the air and look at the panhard rod bushes again, as the noise you are describing sounds like mine did on my 2c when the combined rubber & metal bushes failed.

Did you replace the shackle blocks that are attached on the rear of the springs which are under the boot floor?

silencer s probably the culprit. look for witness marks.

Or something loose in the boot?....

My clonk was shock top mounting bolt not tight enough.

That was an easy fix, I found my were loose but my suspension squeaked.

Problem solved. Started the car and the exhaust fell off which meant I had to get underneath and have a good look. It looks to me as if someone has fitted a S2 exhaust to my car which just does not fit properly resulting in the exhaust hitting the panhard rod mount.
