Title: Mobile Auto Electrician
Post by: Dilambdaman on 14 May, 2021, 04:48:16 PM
Had a problem wiring tow bar electrics on my Lancia (Chrysler) Delta 3. Rear lights and brake light use the same cable - what's that all about? ??? Canbus or something apparently

Contacted Phil Smith Auto Electrical in Crawley West Sussex.

Great guy who really knows his stuff. Van packed full of test gear and parts. Happy to work on all ages of vehicle.

No connection to him other than as a very satisfied customer. Highly recommended.

Robin.

Yes, modern cars electrics are a real dark science, or are to the likes of old farts like me!
Apparently it's all digital or fibre optics or something, you switch on the indicator and it doesn't send 12V down the cable like before, just sends a signal to a control unit at the rear lights which then supplies power to the lift needed, from it's own power source.
That's why towbar electrics need a bypass relay now, which mimics the same thing. Itself has a 12V feed and uses the cars wiring as a switch to know what needs powering...
