Title: Translation wanted
Post by: Mikenoangelo on 18 December, 2020, 09:46:48 PM
Our Augusta has a small plaque fixed by magnet to the dash board. It depicts Maddona and child with the inscription

"Mad della salute puianello"

As a matter of curiousity what does that mean? Google Translate doesn't bring up anything sensible either Italian or Latin

Madonna Della Salute refers to the Mother of health, a religious figure. For example, there is a festival in Venice named after her.
Piuanello is a place name, near Modena. There is a Sanctuary della Madonna della Salute in Piuanello.

Charles is spot on. Seems like someone took a pilgrimage there and bought the plaque as a souvenir!

There is a St Christopher ashtray for an Appia on eBay but the asking price is silly.  St Christopher is a now debunked mythical saint who was the patron saint of travellers, hence all the St Christopher medals and what not.

Grazie molto Christopher - that connects - I bought the car in Modena. Not religious myself but its a bit of the car's history so it will stay there.

I would like to counter the claim that St Christopher is a "debunked mythical saint". St Christopher still is a recognised saint in many Christian traditions, both orthodox and protestant. It is the medieval popular claims about his life and exploits which are now considered mythical. St Christopher himself remains recognised as a patron saint of "athletics, bachelors, transportation (drivers, sailors, etc.), traveling (especially for long journeys), surfing, storms, Brunswick, Saint Christopher's Island (Saint Kitts), Island Rab, Vilnius, epilepsy, gardeners, toothache". If one sets store by saintly intercession he remains fully efficacious. His protection though is unlikely to carry any weight in reducing your car insurance premiums.
