Title: Flushing the coolant system

All,

My car has been standing for a few years and I want to flush the system. Never having done it before, how do I open the  drain cock?  I don't want to do any damage and it's not obvious from looking at it- at least not from my simple brain...

Almost looks like yours has been sheared off in the past ... although that would take some doing I would think ...  but perhaps something happened because those pipes look original but the jubilee clips are much newer.

If you don't want to get a replacement drain connector then removing the clips/pipes seems your best option for draining the system.

Hi, early cars have a drain plug operated from above by a "T" piece. I presume the photo is from below.

Has the T piece broken off ?

its also a half tee ...... could be seized in the valve try a bit of heat...

Here's the drain nut on my S2 before I disassembled the cooling system. Not very sharp I'm afraid.

And here’s what an S2 unit looks like when not on a car. This one is without the bolt and has a thread that needs re-cutting. Free to anyone who wants it, plus postage.

Hi, thanks .  It is a s1 car (68) and yes the t piece is there, do I turn that to open the tap?

There is no tap, but a bolt with a seal in that socket, in the photo it is upside down from its usual installation position, remove the bolt and that is drains the system to larger extent, or pull the larger hose off the bottom of the radiator will do the same.

In my view - Pulling off the hose will help release more crud out of the cooling system.

Yes thats correct. Sometimes seized so go carefully. I think it is clockwise to open.

Not so much a T as cranked to one side.
Sure mine was anticlockwise last time I used it, but now have the same problem.
I think it was series 1 only.

Undoing the jubilee clips and extracting the tap section to free it up at the bench would seem to be the prudent course of action.

Thanks all, much appreciated.   I'll give the handle a try and if that doesn't work undo the hose.

If it is a series 1 then I recommend also undoing it the the heater tap and with another length of hose back flush with the heater valve open.

There's a good chance the retaining bolt is seized 🤔

Thanks all, turned the 'handle' a quarter turn anti-clockwise after a bit of wd40 and all good: Tap opened perfectly.  Such a well made car...
