Title: Beta Coupe VX fuel pump
Post by: Martin D on 19 November, 2019, 06:19:22 PM
Does anyone know the correct spec for a replacement fuel pump for my VX Coupe ?

The nice AA chap tells me the pump on there is a smallish cube shaped thing, not the cylindrical shaped Facet style thing he/I expected to see, and it's not producing enough fuel under enough pressure.

I have a Filter King fuel pressure regulator and assume (?) the fuel pump needs to send fuel at a compatible pressure ???

Any info welcome.

Thanks,
Martin D

Martin, that doesn't sound like an original VX pump to me (square). For an expert opinion though it would be worth joining the Betaboyz Forum. Alan Cooper knows all things VX and will tell you the spec and part number.

Alan is still restoring his very original VX, so he can probably have a look for you!

From memory it is a Bosch fuel injection type pump attached to the cross member under the car near the fuel tank.  If the fuel pressure is too low, it may the gauze filter in the tank itself where the fuel sender fits that may be problem, fuel deposits gums up the fine gauze and prevents an adequate flow of fuel.  Remove the fuel gauge sender and use a small mirror you can inspect the gauze filter in situ, you may need to tear a hole in it to restore the flow. Sounds drastic but it works, helps if you have the correct pump and the series of regulators on the bulkhead too.

Is it carb or i.e. (injection) car? If carb any Facet cylinder type (red/silver/gold top) should be fine with pressure adjusted to c3.5psi.

If injection this will be much higher pressure (10 bar) and as Neil says is generally at the back near the tank.

The Beta VX I believe is the same as the IE cars to the front bulkhead, the plumbing changes with regulators for the carb at that point.

I think that's right Neil. Just not 100% that the ie and VX have exactly the same pump, but either way I don't think it is a square shaped pump, that sounds like a replacement.

I think all VX cars were carburettor

Pressure should not be more than c3.5psi...Webers dont like high pressure. The cube pump will perform OK for general pottering around and is not a high pressure pump. A better Facet pump would be a "silver top" road with a regulator adjusted to 3.5psi.

It's been 25 years since I had a Beta but I'd have another tomorrow if I had storage!
The early carburettored cars had a block mounted mechanical pump. The Volumex cars had a bloody great supercharger mounted where that pump would have lived. They used an electrical pump  mounted near the tank. Something like this one:

Peter W just bought all my VX spares which might include a fuel pump. It might be worth asking him.

Sorry but that pump is wrong as it is for injection systems and way too much (+3bar).

Tim,  the VX despite being a carb fed engine as standard, it uses a Bosch injection pump with extra regulators drops the pressure at the front , perhaps as suggested a check with Peter might confirm the model of pump.  Unless you change the whole fuel delivery system from front to the tank.

Gents,

Thank you very much for all your replies, didn't think I'd spark such a conversation !
Have emailed Alan and also found a replacement listed on Betaboys spares; a Bosch pump, might as well just go that route.

Neil and Neil, (!) you seem to be right, I was told a while ago that the VX was based directly on the ie and instead of re-working the fuel supply Lancia just added lots of complicated plumbing around the supercharger, hence the Filter King fuel pressure regulator I guess.
But I may have some of that wrong, I only have a little knowledge and we know how dangerous that can be.

Thanks all,
Martin.

Well life's never easy with a Lancia : Betaboyz out of stock, but they do list the Bosch OE part number (thanks chaps) so might just let my local garage have that number and leave them to it.

What ? you thought I was going to fit it ? ..... with all that petrol AND electricity ! !

It's definitely a Bosch 044 pump that's fitted to my HPE VX.
