Title: Always look on the biker side of life!!
Post by: rogerelias on 12 February, 2008, 06:19:28 PM
Being as we have strayed to bikes /mopeds and 2 wheeled things in general, i thought i would start a new thread. I will start off by saying i have always had british motorcycles for years, and still have 1, a 1998 Triumph thunderbird sports, which is great, that is in MY shed. Sorry for the pun about BSA, I got it wrong, it should have said .Bits Stuck Anywhere. ;D ;D Just kidding. Lets see how many bike related things get posted, I know some people will say its a Lancia forum , but when it comes down to it we do all share the passion for the marque, but in my book there is nothing wrong with a diversion now and then.P.S. How can I add an image on here?

Just to show how tastes vary, my father made a downpayment on a black shadow (plumbers nightmare) and took it back and bought a (2nd) Gold Flash instead because he didn't enjoy riding it...But everyone would still want the vinnie if asked now...We're all suckers for claimed high top speeds.I don't know if the shadow could really hit more than 115 but the flash (in tuned form) could also wind up to not much less.

Anything much over a ton is ...... frightening on any bike in my experience.

To post a picture look bottom left of the text window for "additional options".  Click that and it opens up box tp attach a file.   I click on the "browse" button and select a file on my PC, then the bit that says "more attachments" to get another box, and another.

Photoshop Elements is where I resize to 600 wide, and "save for web".  On most pictures doing a resize and save and upload is quicker than waiting for a large file to uuuuuuuuuuuuuplooooooooooad whatever the savings at the server end...

=======

My bike experiance was a hard tail BSA Bantam - great fun off road - lethal on the road.  It belonged to a school friend and having messed about with it as kids I later restored it in the kitchen - as you do - with the long term loan of it as payment.   HOWEVER after three near misses in the first week gave it up.  I think the problem was being treated "as a motorbike" when it really only had the performance of peddles, at least with peddles you are taller and more "in the way".  I say near misses, that's three near misses from death - it was actual contact from cars cutting in.

A fast bike - and been on several pillion - is able to get itself out the way of danger.  I never got to the fast bike stage - I went for the safer option of racing a self restored / built car with no roof or roll cage.   A Bantam or Rudge on the trailer as well was a good idea for something to fix should the car behave itself and we get bored.

An autocycle is a different prospect altogeather - looks like a bike - goes like a bike - gets treated like a bike - it just takes more energy.   A friend said it took him more energy doing a cross London commute in a TVR than on a peddle bike and a similar equation comes to play on an autocycle.  Maybe its the buttock clenching that exhausts in the same way that skiing looks so easy "just standing on two planks" but in practice is about as bad as running.  Its a very smug way to travel when its working - and a four stroke - with two speeds...   Must confess I did ebay for it after google.  One day.

I must admit I always had a liking for one of those funny little French things
a basic push bike with a tiny motor strapped on top of the front wheel.

Some pics off the web.

NACC is a lovely club, and their magasine "Buzzing" used to be such a treat.

Here's that Bugatti motor:-

...and stumbled on this rocket bike...

Don't make them like that anymore?   Go google "Ron Patrick" and also "jet kart".

At last I've had a ride on a Raleigh RM9, not mine but one loaned for a 30 mile ride last sunday, great, can't wait to get mine on the road as I've now got the old registration number back, even it's non- transferrable.

Forgotten how much fun you can still have a 30mph ;D

are we talking about the fulvia saloon or the Raleigh moped Brian??  ;D

I last road my BSA bantam in 1981; it's languishing at the back of the garage under a load of junk.I sometimes get an irrational urge to tidy it up and get it back on the road but perhaps somethings are best kept as fond memories.I think "downhill in a hurricane" it would top out at about 45 mph and the brakes on my mountain bike are much more powerful but it was a dream come true when I first rode it... :)

Hi Robin,
 Glad to see I'm not the only one ;D
As my RM9 is based on the Moby & has the same engine they're cousins under the skin, in fact mine is supposed to be a RM9 but an expert thinks it's probably an RM9+1 which has a dual seat, rear footrests & larger spokes in the back wheel, so even closer to your Moby, waiting for another expert to confirm & then I'll be looking for a seat & footrests, as should be able to get the rear wheel upgraded.
Your Moby looks similar to an RM5.

Finally got my Raleigh RM9 back on the road, and took her for her first run on the road in 20+ years, going for Mot next tuesday, and on the sunday a road run with the West Anglian Cyclemotor Club, around Mid Bedfordshire. :D

Looks very nice Brian;
after I saw the "top gear in vietnam" special where they rode from south to north 1500 miles on similarly low power steeds, I get the urge to attempt something similar.."Le Jog" on a moped perhaps?.great "fun".

Bikes ;D Yes,I'm a  recently born again biker and delighted with my resurrected two wheeled career. I actually rode bikes for 10 years before I ever sat in a car, which of course makes you a better driver :) Anyway after an absence of 26 years, definitely older, and probably no wiser, but hopefully slower ,I bought a 30 year old Kawasaki z650 ,its in lovely condition and I started to like it so much that I hated getting it dirty and wet,so bought a 14 year old Suzuki 600 Bandit (you can't but help loving Jap 4 cyl air cooled engines) You get the drift,the three Lancias now share their bedroom with two bikes,and i have to say I had forgotten the thrill of two wheels. God help me if I fall off ,I'l be like an airfix kit with bits (bones) everywhere, only hope is someone will know how to put me back together again ;D

All the Kings Horse & all the Kings Men, couldn't put Eyore together again ;D

I started out on bikes as well, back in the 50's it was a definite progression through pushbike, moped/ winged wheel, motorbike before working yourself up to a car, usually Onlythe Toffs, Doctors, crooks and business men who were able to afford new cars then. :(
I know it's sensible but I hate wearing a crash helmet :( and it's seems even more pointless when top speed on the Raleigh is only about 35mph with a following wind, whereas the boyos on their racing pushbikes can tear past me, and only have to wear one of the stupid looking cycle crash hats, perhaps I ought to get a turban ???

Nice to see the thread has picked up again  :) I was bought up with motorcycles, they have always been in the family, my first bike was a Royal Enfield Crusader super sports in 1974, it was not new, and did not last long, engine went bang :o Their motto was Built like a gun, they sure were right, have always had Brit since then , had a Triumph Trident T150V export , for about 9 years, then sold it and bought the present bike a 1999 Triumph Thunderbird Sports, the faster yellow one with the 2 pipes up the same side,( the other colours were slower) ??? . will try and post piccys on here soon.
