Title: eBay RHD 2000 HF Project just sold - cheap or fair price?
Post by: michaelkaye on 05 October, 2018, 06:38:02 PM
I admit I thought about placing a bid but too big a project for me ultimately (and no where to store it). Does anyone else think that it went for a song or is that a fair price?

not too bad if it is complete...the bodywork however looked tired so fun and games there

Some more info on the body from the seller:

The offside front wing has been cut away to check the end of the sill, so needs a panel making up. That sill has had a patch on the rear. Edges of the floor may be a bit crusty in one or two places. Most of the rust is surface, with some pitting to the metal. A few repairs needed to front and rear screen surrounds. The car needs a full restoration, but structurally it's pretty good, and all parts are there except screen rubbers and carpets (all available)

Looking at it - not all that long ago that sort of car would have been passed along for free either due to loss of storage or in the hope they'd at least stand a chance of seeing it back on the road albeit in someone else's care.  Could easily have been stripped for spares.  Might even have been stripped as it was known to have a particularly good gearbox.

There's a LOT of work to do there.  Not all that long ago any work to a screen surround would write a car off.  Even if it looked perfect and had an MOT taking care of a "few minor issues" (perhaps jumps out of gear or brakes not quite 100pct) can take a lot of parts, specialist work, effort.

Did one sell for 20 recently?  I think it was a low miles low ownership preserved car.  What's the most a "restored" car has sold for?  By that I mean a "basic get it back on the road" rather than an open cheque book Thornley Kelham type restoration...  Even if the labour was free and the storage was free there's every chance a car starting from that state will always "owe more money than its worth".

Putting a value on something like that is always going to be tricky.  Start from its value "done" and subtract everything it needs at middle of the road specialist prices and it would be a big negative number.  Then again as a hobby it would keep you out the pub and off the sofa for a lot of evenings and weekends you wouldn't need to look for another project for a while.

Not sure if that's made me look at my project more fondly or ask for offers :)

For the right person with the right skills and money I think it will be a good project and potentially viable looking at those sales prices.

For someone like me, who would rely on restorers etc I think the labour cost would have made this a non starter.

Maybe the purchaser is a member of the club and will at some point t chime in and let us know how they are getting on.

I dont know what discount to give but Italy “asking prices” are seemingly higher than UK RHD cars. (20%?)

:o Best of luck to the buyer.
Way too much for that car. The vendor must have taken no more than two minutes to bang off those camera phone pics.
' An hour of easy work would see the engine running '.  ;D

Would possibly cost north of £ 20k to make it half decent.
Look what's coming up for sale at Barons at the end of the month and it's modest estimate. Even if it made 50 % above top estimate it would be a better buy.

Agreed the white South African car is a much better buy (a car I was considering buying before I got distracted by the Fulvia sport I bought 😀).

I think Flavias are still in the category of "only get a project if you want a project".

The conversation I'm looking forward to with Colin is "what would it take to do a RHD conversion of an Italian import?"  Might start a thread and everyone can chip in.

David. I asked this question (about LHD to RHD conversion) a few weeks back and there are some replies in there.
