Title: the wonders of Coke!
Post by: toby2449 on 21 January, 2008, 09:55:29 AM
At the weekend had a look at the Dedra's tired looking engine, & decided to take the rocker covers off, strip the black paint off & re-paint red. So cleaned off the oil/dirt etc, then applied a light acid to eat away at the paint....nothing, looked around in the garage for something stronger, came across 4 ltrs of Coke, soaked the rocker covers in it & the paint has started to lift!!!!!!!!!! Makes you wonder.....

As it happend just this week I was researching paint strippers...  This is where to get the stuff they use to strip airliners etc.  They recomended 520 as something to brush onto aluminium panels.  Yet to try it - but if it doesn't work I know its a short walk to the 7-11 corner shop for something better.

Such are the wonders of the modern world its non hazardous - unlike coke...

Coke contains, like all corbonated drinks, carbonic acid, and more importantly phosphoric acid, which is serious stuff.  This is one of the reasons it is very bad for your teeth (kids - are you listening?) but probably very good as a paint stripper.

before this goes off topic ... (ie: awaiting Geoff to contribute)

does it make a difference between diet and non-diet ?

...

anyway, I use WD-40 for cleaning the exhaust and get spots of tar off the car.

Listen "3"  it's the best mixer on the planet it goes with all my favourites except Gin,
so I wouldn't waste it on stripping. (flate coke works better by the way)

Coke is also excellent at releasing rusted/stuck components I always have an "out of Date" can in the garage, 24 hours soaking has yet to fail to work.

not really sure, it just seems to, it may be that when flat it doesn't bubble on the surface
it just sits there.

Good tips with coke as PlusGas can be pricey.

In the same order as the stripper I got a P*erago disk to try.  Its fantastic on pitted surfaces - really scares the rust out the pores and leaves it shiny.

On a flat surface it makes pitts and is much slower than a random orbit sander.

It goes in a drill and the technique is the lightest possible touch as the tips are supposed to vibrate and bounce on the surface like shot blasting rather than scrape.   There's no physical effort as I find with a brush in a grinder.  A brush always seems to throw bristles so another advantage is no need for the heavy gloves either.
