Clashes with VSCC Prescott always 1st weekend in August!

Pretty clear there'll be hardly any prewar cars at the LMC event, then. I was going to come in the Lambda this year, but not on those dates.

Same here! VSCC Prescott is the best vintage car meeting in the world, so I never miss it.

Life's full of choices....

I welcome the effort put in by the few to give the Lancia Motor Club its annual weekend gathering and it is in my diary.

The committee have noted this no go part of the calendar for future AGM weekends.

Although VSCC members will want to go to Prescott if we only go on Sunday we could go to the LMC on Friday or Saturday for the Dinner and drive to Prescott on Sunday morning about a 1 hour drive even if this means missing the AGM & concours.

Heretical, but maybe do the concours on Saturday??

Tim, Don't start that again, caused enough problems last time >:( it was changed and we've only had it back on a Sunday for a couple of years.
As others said, if events clash then you have to decide your own priorities.
Same argument applies, many people don't have Saturday's free. Ok if you are attending the weekends as it doesn't make any difference to you
For me The AGM takes priority over all other events.

Hi all. Not sure about what has happened before...  :o ??? :-[

Some questions if I may...

Can you just turn up for the Sunday with the AGM and concourse? i.e. No dinner, drive and so forth before hand...

My motor isn't road legal, is there space etc for me to park, load and unload from a trailer? I saw pictures from last year which sugested it was on a big field which would be fine if it is the same for this year.

Richard

Daytrippers are always welcome on Sunday and I am not sure but the hotel has a lot of parking so unloading a trailer is not going to be a problem. When the application comes out there should be options for attendance.

Hope that helps.

Yes, details and booking form will be published in the next Viva Lancia!

Apologies for the clash with Prescott, but threading the needle between car club & motorsport events and finding hotels with availability (in peak wedding season) is tremendously difficult.

Over Easter I popped into the Midland Air Museum (its on the AGM weekend agenda, hence posting here) to kill a bit of time ahead of a Landrover production line tour - and we ran out of time... I'll absolutely be back again.  The "headlines" there are access to the Vulcan cockpit and a Frank Whittle exhibition, but of most interest to me was their Argosy.

http://www.midlandairmuseum.co.uk/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_Whitworth_AW.660_Argosy

For air museum fans I think of Cosford "as just up the road from there" but its 50 miles and an hour...just happens to be very close to my sister (or more importantly nephew).

Landrover:

https://www.landrover.com/experiences/manufacturing-tours/index.html

We went a few years back to see the last of the Defenders - big hammers and quarter inch tolerances.  This time it was the "Velar" (new to me) which shares its line with the Jaguar F-Pace (and much else...) in Solihull.  They had tooling in place for a third car down the same line, "don't tell anyone but" its the electric I-Pace.  Aluminium, glue, rivets, lots of photos of glue lines etc (for ambulance chasers to look at as much as quality control) and working to microns.  I expect we'll go back for the engine plant in Wolverhampton, and I'd like to see their "classics" set up which is a production line restoration facility as well as the 500 car private collection.

Their Voodoo is an impressive thing as well.  Not a plane I'd heard of, but a big scary thing with its engines sticking out the back like a hotrod.  Built as a bomber escort it was also an interceptor designed to throw a nuclear missile into the middle of an enemy formation and a "one way single trip bomber".  They had the range to break a lot of records and took the first photos of Cuban missiles.  Not without its issues they still built 800 of them before the Phantom took over in 1960.  Two Phantoms at the museum, they built over 5000 of them, some are STILL in service.

PS - Not sure if I was more impressed or grumpy that it took the Peter Twiss / Fairy Delta II speed record...

David, if you're interested in early jet aircraft I can't recommend a book I read recently highly enough. It's called 'Empire of the Clouds' by James Hamilton-Patterson,  ISBN 978-0-571-24795-0. It tells of Britain's post war aircraft industry and leaves you speechless with the danger, the lack of knowledge about jet behaviour and the age old story of muddled British management and letting others benefit from our ideas. It's certainly not a dull dry read.

That looks like £1.83 well spent then :)

Amazon - love them and loathe them - but they are a brilliant platform for independent second hand book sellers.

When you've finished it you should watch the old film 'The Sound Barrier'. That's what happened to me - by pure coincidence as I finished the book the film came on tv. You realise how realistic the film is.

Do we an idea when we will receive official confirmation that our booking/monies have been received?
Also, I'm looking at extending my booking from Saturday/Sunday to Friday/Saturday/Sunday but I'm getting a failed email delivery to Mark Hall !

Is there an issue?

Cheers

A5 Closure

Those like me coming from the Southeast and wanting to avoid the M1 should note that the A5 is closed at Towcester High Street from 23 July until November.
The official diversion will take you from Old Stratford up to the M1, although there may be other (better) ways around it.

As a resident of Towcester, I can vouch for the fact that the "official" diversion is a waste of time!  Simply turn left at the crossroads in front of the road closure, then left at the McDonalds roundabout, then you'll be straight back on track - adding no more than 1 mile to your overall journey!  Having said that, we always travel to Kenilworth by continuing West past Silverstone, then cut up Welsh Lane to join the M40 at Banbury - so much quicker and easier

I hope you all enjoy the museum tonight.

Having enjoyed "Empire of the Clouds: When Britain's Aircraft Ruled" (recommended above) I remembered this on the TV, and looking closer I think its "the documentary of the book".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNJl_EijuWA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvU7nQUethw

There are two versions of the book.  The later one has a lot of photos but 25% less text.  That's the version I read and have now ordered a couple more from the bibliography.

...and don't forget the 1952 film "The Sound Barrier".   Having read the book, as well as understanding the broad impact of the Comet crashes, I also now see the fictional company as DeHavilland where Geoffrey Senior lost two sons to test flying.  Different times indeed.

Glad you enjoyed the book David. Some of it was hard to believe even though true. The wings flapping about on the DH110 that crashed at Farnborough and whole flights of Meteors crashing around the countryside because of the fuel thirst. Nothing seemed to be said. Imagine if 6 Eurofighters crashed in one day in the UK through running out of fuel? As you say, different times.

The Germans lost literally the majority of their Starfighters to accidents.

Test flying HAD to be over land so they wouldn't lose the black box.

Just got in from a 150 mile hot open top thrash back in our Vignale Iniezione after a brilliant AGM meeting!

Many thanks to Jo and Mark for excellent organisation and a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

The venue was superb and met, in our opinion, just about all the needs of our club. Indeed it was proposed to use them again if at all possible...

Also thanks to Paul Baker who secured an engaging and informative after dinner speaker in Ing Paolo Buffardi who stayed on to admire the cars on Sunday and present the concours awards.

I second both the approval of the hotel and thanks for getting Ing Paolo Buffardi along. He was with us for the whole weekend and was unfailingly charming, friendly and enthusiastic. In return club members were able to treat him to a trip in the Hyena and his first ever ride in a Flaminia. In my opinion you can invite him back as a speaker too.

Here are a few pictures (with apologies for the quality. I think the lens on my phone could do with a clean.)

Thanks to Jo, Mark and all the others who helped to make this the best AGM we have attended. Paolo Buffardi's after dinner speech was especially well received. It was good to see such a large turn out as well. Was this due to having it later than usual?
We had a hot journey home but mainly on minor roads largely traffic free, hope yours went as well. Look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Just to add our thanks to Jo and Mark and everyone else involved making the weekend so enjoyable.

As has been said great venue/setting, very enjoyable dinner with Paolo Buffardi's presentation especially entertaining. Even the Alfa club members on the next table seemed to enjoy it despite Paolo's good natured grumblings about Alfa development budgets!

Always a great chance to catch up with old friends and make several new.

Thanks for all the kind words.  I won't deny it was hard work to make it look so effortless, but the smiles, laughter and camaraderie made it all worthwhile.  Of course we didn't do it alone - we must acknowledge Paul Baker in particular for finding Ing. Paolo Buffardi and his fabulous presentation.  Just to prove the smiles lasted all weekend, just look at some of the photos from Saturday's driving tour  8)
