As I start working through the boxes of parts removed from my Fulvia during the rebuild I'm wondering what is the best approach to smartening up a lot of the corroded and rusty hardware. De-rusting is fairly straightforward but I'm not sure what finish to try to achieve. Has anybody on the Forum ever tried home plating? Here's a kit advertised on Ebay, with a couple of before and after pictures. Does this seem like a good idea, or something not to be touched with a barge pole?

Many thanks Richard - if I lived in the South East I might have taken you up on the offer but I'm a long way away in Lancashire.

I am about to embark on this, I bought a kit years ago and am thinking along the same lines as you. I am looking for a cadmium (yellowish) finish though

Simon, this kit allegedly claims to also do a yellow finish - see wording from the Ebay ad below. Have a look at the Gateros website. They make it all sound straightforward but it's probably not, judging from the comments on Richard's previous post!

Norm, look for a metal refinishers in your area and let them do it whilst getting on with something else. I put a box full of nuts, bolts, small brackets, fixings etc ( 225 items) into my local platers, instructed them to plate them Zinc and Yellow passivate or Zinc and Clear if you want a silver finish. It took a week and cost £65.00, it`s a no brainer!

Plus one for what John said Norm! I bought one of these kits a few years back and the results weren't consistent for me. I guess it takes practice and you're left with a bunch of chemicals that you can't dispose of easily....
Glad to see Geoff is making progress with the welding, it looked worse that I thought it would be when I saw it just before Christmas but it'll be solid again soon!

Yes Guy, stripping off the paint has revealed more problems underneath, but Geoff is a magician and I'm very pleased with progress! I think I'll take your and others' advice about the plating. Just need to find a metal finisher!

There are 2 metal finishers in Liverpool but they don't do chrome, I have been told there is one in Skem but I have not been able to find details.
Had chrome done years ago by Nyphos on Crewe.

Thanks Don. The "Cars and Coffee Liverpool" group have given me some contacts to try: Quality Polishing in Bootle, Rockchrome in Seaforth, King and Fowler, and Northwest Ultrasonic. I'll check them out. Norm

Just been playing in the garage and set up a nickel plating system - very Heath Robinson, but seems to work. The solution is kept warm (32°C) using a fish tank heater
The nut and bolt on the right were in the solution for an hour with about 2 amps running through it. There is definitely a difference and I am now running it again for longer to see if I can get a thicker layer. The bolt on the left for comparison , had just been cleaned up with a wire brush

Inhale the fumes to cure all known chest ailments (NOT)....
