Title: Remote gear selector assembly
Post by: HBG on 28 March, 2024, 08:44:01 PM
Hi folks.

I have to solve the problem of a buzzing noise from the gear change assembly that manifests at 3500 to 4000 revs, a place I often find myself at.

I've attached a pic of the Tav 29 sheet for reference.

Having had a close look, I can see play between the shaft (1) and the bush (5). There is also some play where the lower fork (12) screws in. Finally there's play between the ball of the gear stick (16) and the ring (16). In short, it's all worn, and I haven't even started with the other end of the rod!

Does anyone have experience of this assembly? Is there any chance that I could remove bush (5) with the assembly in the car? Ring (7) could be worked on without major disassembly I suppose. And what about the lower fork (12)? I believe part (20) is a helicoil thing, easy to remove and replace? Likely to need replacing? And part (32), does this live in a groove in part (12)? What is its purpose? Would a new one of these take up slack in the rotating part (12)?

Many many questions. I throw myself at the feet of your collective great knowledge and seek enlightenment!

Item 20 is a spring, item 32 is a rubber strip both intended as an anti vibration measure. When I removed the fork 12 it was quite loose in the thread of the housing so I put some PTFE tape on it and made a new rubber strip to firm it up a bit but still allow the fork to rotate.

Hi Sean, thanks for that.

Does the spring fit in the housing before the fork? It looks similar size to the fork, not larger to go over it. Does item 32 sit in a groove in the fork? I'm intimately familiar with PTFE tape and would expect it to disintegrate quickly. Did yours survive?

Did you change the rod bush?

The spring applies a pre load to the fork, there is a dimension of 30mm from the fork hole centre to the edge of the housing for how far it should be screwed in, the rubber strip sits in a groove. I have not replaced the bushes 5 as I think the housing will have to be removed for this, ring 7 I left in place but should be fairly easy to replace once the lever is removed. I have not checked the tape but the rattle has not returned after two years.

Thanks Sean.

Bush 5 is definitely the difficult thing to address so you have me thinking that I could improve the lower fork and ring 7 and then see how things are.

Such is the movement between the rod and bush 5 and that it's a shouldered bush, I feel it's worth trying to prise the bush out. This I'll think carefully about before attempting.
