If it fails the HC test doesn't that mean that it's running way too rich? Good tune up of the carbs should sort it unless of course they are really warn; jets spindles etc.

If it were me I would clean up the magnetic drain plug and fill with new oil. Then inspect again after 500 miles say. Hopefully ( if you are lucky)  the swarf is from the reason that you needed a gearbox rebuild in the first place.
But if there is still swarf on the drain plug it will ruin your bearings over time and further inspection will be required.
Good luck.

Never had any problems with 3921F material from Industrial Brakes, Wolverhampton Tony. I was about to respond when I saw your second post.
I usually ask for glue AND rivets by the way ( being from the school of Belts and braces!).

I have done 3500 km since the rebuild of my S2 1,3. I am busy with the service. Part of which is changing the gearbox oil. Should I be worried about the furies on my gearbox drain plugs. 2nd gear grinds slightly when selecting until it has warmed up which happens quickly. After that no more grinding. The box was rebuilt as part of the restoration - new bearings, seals etc.

Hi all
At a recent MOT my S3 recently struggled on the missions test, specifically the HC (hydrocarbon) levels. It seems there’s a set target level for all petrol vehicles by age category.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with their Fulvia and there any easy way to remedy it?
Noting that the cars are MOT exempt but I find it a worthwhile exercise to have someone else look the car over once a year.
Thanks

I looked back and saw your recommendations, Chris Gawne. Thanks, I have passed all this on to expedite the relining. I have used your favourite brake lining people myself in the past, and been happy.

Thanks all - looks like its the new rubber mount plate as some have suggested.  Omicron should mention it as would have been easy to do with it off the car.  I will avoid references to the balls as what was OK for Round the Horne is probably not acceptable in 2024.  Showing age.

Any specific recommendation for lining material for 6th series B20 front brake shoes (fitted to a 4th series car as it happens)?

Many thanks

On a "got to start somewhere" basis towards making stuff like that I've been experimenting.  Rather than clutter this thread I've started another:

Thought I would join this one in case someone has an obvious answer.

Took off carbs (Solex on an S1) to replace the rubber mount which appeared cracked from outside but was fine inside ( should have done it before purchasing new part) Cleaned carbs up a bit with carb cleaner but otherwise left undisturbed.  Put back with new gaskets and sealing compound on joint faces.  Now won't idle below 2000 and rising as gets warm.  Is an air leak the obvious answer as can't think where it might be.  Would cleaning of outsides cause problem due to turning carbs upside down?

Anyway any thoughts as due on tour in June.

Dis-connect the rod (15) in the pic and see if that makes a difference to the idle - if it does adjust the end pieces until it is correct
