The recent interest in fuel injection Flavias suggests the need for a new subject heading - hence this post.

I looked back on what I had written on this topic when I was still running my Flavia Vignale with Kugelfischer fuel injection, and found two short articles that were in the LMC Newsheets in November 1991 and April 1992. See copies of both attached.

Back in the mists of time when I ran a 1967 Flavia Coupe with Mr Kugelfischer's system I could not get the car to start until the injector body had been sent to a man in Nottingham who worked on BMW 2002 racing cars. He had access and the knowledge of how to use all the special tools required to replace all the plungers and seals Colin mentions. Back on the car the beast started..and as Colin mentioned any running problems seemed to be fuel pressure and pipework leaks.

Fascinating stuff.  

As for electronics replacing mechanical systems Bosch K-Jetronic "constant flow" types (the injectors are not pulsed but produce a constant spray) work by "opening and closing the taps" using a combination of a sensor plate moving inside a cone in the intake for the gross adjustment modified by manifold vacuum, a bimetallic strip for warm up and an aneroid for altitude.  My 1987 Mercedes has this "hydraulic control" on fuel and a completely separate electronic ignition system.  With the advent of catalytic convertors, which are highly sensitive to air-fuel ratio, they added an electronic module to fine tune based on a lambda sensor output.  A couple of years later they combined the ignition and injection into a single system.
