1985 Y10 Turbo & 1993 Dedra 2000 Turbo

« on: 27 January, 2015, 01:30:19 PM »

Hi All,

If you're as big a fan as i am of the Y10, Y, Ypsilon then you'll have noticed around December time that a beautiful Y10 Turbo with 21K miles came onto the market.  Well, to cut a long story short that's my new baby.  Something I've longed for, for years and years.

My aim is to get it up to as near too as when it left the factory (still undecided about the wheels though).

I've been busy sourcing as many replacement parts as i possibly can.  Things still on the list that I'm busy hunting for are as below;

Original Grundig or Blaupunkt stereo
Original service book, handbook and wallet
where to get cut to fit wipers for the headlights?

If you're able to help then very much appreciated.

At the moment i'm replacing the rear electric fuel pump, found an almost identical replacement from Ebay (coming from Poland)  i'm not too sure about the rear pre filter though i.e. what to get.  i took it off and the crud that came out of both the pump and the pre-filter was amazing, loads of orange rusty bits.  May explain the occassional backfire i noticed when i first drove it home i.e. not enough fuel pressure getting to the carb?

Just got new exhaust mounts delivered from Ricambio and a length of fuel cable!

Would love to hear from some fellow Y10 fns out there?!

All the best

John

Hi John, I thought I had done well enough to get a 28K 1986 Y10.  You have done better than me with 21K and a turbo to boot. I have a standard 998cc FIRE unit. I am quite content with that, I know them quite well, this is the 5th that I have owned.

I am pretty sure that I can help you with owners handbook, service book and wallet, but not for a couple of weeks or so!! I have rather a lot on my plate at the moment!! Are you in a hurry for them?

I am in SE Essex if you are ever over this way it would be good to meet up.

Best wishes,

                Andy

Hi Andy,

Good to hear from a fellow Y10ian!  wow 28K is good going!  i actually used to live in Basildon for a while but i'm now way over the other side and rarely get back to Basvegas.  But who knows........ if you were able to help out with the manuals i'd be really grateful.

Got any pics of your?

Cheers
John

From the other end of the spectrum here is my 100k miler---currenlly on SORN but hope to get her back on the road one day.She is a basic Fire and shares the yard with a Touring and another Fire being broken for spares!

I'm an ex Y10 & Y owner but still a great fan of Y10 & Ypsilon. so congratulations on your purchase, hopefully we'll see you at the AGM in it!
Can't help a lot with parts these days, but if I was you I'd forget fitting headlamp wipers, Didn't have them on my Y10's  but had them on my Dedra 2.0iese, and frankly they're more trouble than they worth.

I'll have a look in my brochures as I'm sure I have one for the Turbo that I could copy for you, if you pm me.

While none of the workshop manuals I have cover the turbo they do cover anything else that was common with all other Y10's, if you need anything anytime.

Friend I workrd with back in the late 1980's had a Y10 Turbo and it was a fierce little beast, went like stink but the fuel consumption was horrendous!

Ben,
your Touring must be one of, if not the oldest Y10 still about?

What year is your Touring then Ben? I take it it's the blue one in the first pic? Mines a 1985 C Reg? Are any B's still in existence?

Love your collection Ben, I almost bought a Selectronic in the same metallic red (183) as mine that was selling on eBay for £225. I wanted it for parts and wish I'd have bought it now Sad

I'm very lucky with mine it's a only had two owners from new and has been stored for most of its life by its first owner HROwen Lancia of London. Fortunately, it had the Lancia Di-nitrol treatment from new and is plastered with underseal as well, this has kept the body 95% rust free, just a few small patches to get fixed and she's a good un.
I love the wheels on your Gold Touring, where they standard or did you buy them? I think they were an option on the later model Turbos. Mine has a set on non standard wheels from a later Y10 GT.
Hope to see you at some of the meets
Cheers. Joh

Cheers Brian, I'm thrilled with the purchase, a) because I've fulfilled a life long ambition of owning one, as I never got the chance as a teenager and b) because I've found one that's 95% rot free and only 21k miles.

I'm really looking forward to getting it to some of the shows this year. I don't think it'll be in the condition I want to get it in by then, but these things take time and lots of money unfortunately.  Ebay has come up trumps though. So far with me being able to source a plethora of parts.  Still searching for a few bits n bobs to keep it in as original condition as I can. I'm a purist when it comes to my vehicles, if it wasn't available from the showroom then it usually sits uncomfortably with me, eg my wheels.

I know there's been Y10 engine discussion elsewhere.  Looking up the FIRE its 70mm bore and 64.9mm stroke, the Touring is the 127 (and128?) engine with a 76mm bore and 57.8mm "some say" good for 100bhp.  Is it the later 1300cc that is considered the "boat anchor"?  76.1mm bore 71.5 stroke.

Is the Touring engine "the same" as this one?

Adam Harling's site - anyone know if that car was completed?

Always good to see the RAC rally car.  Its subsequent history here:

A bit more on how it went:

Anyone got the full story?

This is a picture of a late Y10 Turbo with alloys, much better than the GTie ones where the lacquer always peels allowing corrosion to set in.

OK time for a short update on  a few of the jobs I've been getting sorted.

The petrol pump arrived!!

removed the old one including the per-filter and the perished braided hose.
fitted new terminals to the pump electric feed
soaked the pump hosing in vinegar to remove some very slight rust on the edges
fitted new petrol grade hose from the sender

Hmmmm now have to wait for the rust to dissolve before i fit the pump back!
so on to the next job, not altogether necessary but i was itching to see how things looked behind the rear bumper. So four bolts later and it was off and in the bath getting a good scrubbing both sides.

having a look at the metal work behind the bumper i was completely astonished.  There's not one slightest sign of rot at all, just copious amounts of Di-nitrol running out of everywhere!  Am i happy or am i happy!

Right off to post my next post!

How rare for a car to get better and better the closer you look.  Well done on finding it, and you really do seem to be the right hands for such a find.
