It seems that Poundland like selling Lancias in their toy section. A few years ago they sold Majorette Lybra models in all the colours. Now it seems they are selling Deltas. And yes, it is a Lancia as it is LHD Cheesy

Very nice of them.Any other models? Will Poundland be forced to rebrand as £1.50 Land in the event of appropriate inflation?

There were other toy cars, but the Delta was the only Lancia in the toy section.  The quality of them seemed to be pretty poor, but what do you expect for £1?!

Is there a Euroland Stanley?

You may have been joking but no, none of these Poundland type shops seem to have appeared here. I was talking to a French businessman last year who had just returned from a business visit to Leeds. Two things struck him - all the empty shops, which he couldn't understand as both the UK and France were in a recession. I think the answer is that here towns are still full of lots of little independent shops, whereas  in the UK it's mainly the same few names, so if they collapse half the High St goes. He was also amazed when he came out of the business meeting to see a line of BMW's. He asked what they were and was told 'Company cars'. He was so surprised he took a photo to show his colleagues back in France. He couldn't work out how businesses could be in recession but still have fleets of BMW's.

I can answer both of your French acquaintance's questions I think (I live just outside Leeds).

1. A big modern Mall was built in Leeds a couple of years ago (Trinity Centre). All the big brands promptly  de-camped there, leaving a string of empty shops littered through the city centre.

2. The recession didn't bother big business in the UK outside banking, though even they didn't cut top salaries, nor no doubt the company Beamer that went with them. The taxpayer in general, and public sector workers in particular (5 year wage freeze) completely underwrote the whole thing here.

Some thoughts here.

Some years ago my wife's German/Canadian cousin who has lived in England for many decades commented that "the trouble with Britain is that nothing is too cheap".

My son has been working in retail for an Italian company and observed that whereas in Britain the supermarkets have competed with and largely destroyed local  retailing, in Europe they haven't.

I think this is particularly the case with fresh food. I despair at the quality in our supermarkets and they all sell themselves on who is the cheapest.

Posts removed as I changed my mind about posting anything other than about cars.  It felt naughty enough putting Alfa photos up.

Don't have to feel guilty about the Alfa. I'd like to think we're not Lancia fanatics to the exclusion of all other marques. Plus in a roundabout way we learnt why Aston's had those strange wire wheels.
