Hello everyone, as Mr Fridd already knows, I am rather paranoid regarding my cars gearbox, which, although working well, apart from a little obstructiveness going into 2nd, for which I double de clutch, has a disconcerting rattling sound when on overrun, eg going down hill, in 2nd. I have asked around a few places,Omicron, Richard Thorne, JSW, and been quoted around £2000 including some parts Clutch etc which it would be foolish not to replace at the same time, if needed, and although I realise that it's a very big job, is somewhat more than I can afford. So I'm wondering if anyone knows anyone else who may be cheaper. I'm willing to help, with some of the less complex tasks, if that was a part of the deal, as I have some mechanical knowledge. Thanks, Andrew Stacey.

It may be just the clutch release bearing being a bit noisy - most are on Fulvias until they are replaced. Are you sure you have diagnosed the noise to ascertain if it is gearbox related?

Is the obstructiveness of 2nd gear only when the gearbox is cold? Mine is sometimes like this (has been for 20 years) but selects perfectly once warm. I get around it by skipping from 1st to 3rd for a while. I believe this used to be common on the old dogleg Ferrari boxes too and the 1st to 3rd change was recommended from a cold start. Did I read somewhere once that a Fulvia box is a ZF design?

Just realised - you'll have the 4 speed box.

Apologies for not posting replies individually, I'm not sure how to do it. Lancialulu: Would the clutch release bearing only make the noise in 2nd, as that's the only gear it does it in,and would it effect the clutch operation which is fine ? I'm presuming it's the box as it can be a bit obstructive, changing down into 2nd, unless I double de clutch, though not usually when changing up, are there any other tests I could try to be sure ? Stan: Yes it does have a 4 spd box, but I remember having the baulking when cold problem on my 1600 zagato, thank you all.

Answer NO to both. Seems you may have a bearing problem. Nothing but removal of the box and have a look inside. You may try to contact Peter Gerrish (see back of VL).

Peter Gerrish will recommend Neale Shepherd and having had him rebuild my Fanalone box I can tell you that he certainly knows his way around Fulvia gearboxes as well as a lot of other stuff. Very knowledgeable guy and approachable too. Not difficult to spend £2000 on a Fulvia gearbox if it needs any new gears or crown wheel and pinion. Robin.

John Day is another thought: http://www.dayandwhites.co.uk/"You are welcome to visit us, share a freshly made tea or coffee (in a mug) and we can chat about how we can best help you." The "NEWS" tab has a feature from AutoItalia about who they are and what they're about. David

Agreed Neale Shepherd very good. Alternative is Tony Wilson who has over 40 years building all sorts of gearboxes - especially Hewlands for race cars. He has rebuilt several Fulvia Gboxes including my Fanalone Piggyback one and my spare S2 1600 box. http://www.tonywilson43.co.uk/
