for those who have been reading my appia rat or restore thread ou will know that I've hit a brick wall with DVLA registering the car on its original number plate, apparently the chassis number on the car does not match their records and they have now sent me forms out to register the car as if it were made up of parts from several cars which its not! has anyone had any experience of how to tackle this as I really don't want to loose its identity , I know what they are going to try and do and that's issue an age related plate that I don't want as TXT23 has been on this car for obviously a very long time , I have thought of a letter from the consortium confirming that the chassis number is correct for a s appia of the age of the plate, also being very friendly with a police vehicle examiner he is prepared to write a letter that the car has not been tampered with and that the plates and bolts holding them on etc are untouched, any advice or experiences welcome and appreciated  Smiley

James, you seem to be in the same position as I was when I bought the Dilambda. They must have got a lot more fussy than they were 13 years ago. It came with just an old style buff log book showing a last entry in 1978. I rang DVLA and having ascertained that ERF 294 was available they registered it and sent me a V5.

Don't give up, ring them every other day and maybe you'll get a sympathetic officer. Good luck.

James, you need to get the Club to certify that the registration number is the correct one for the car, and this information should be available from Club records, surely?
That may help (!)
Perhaps they have the Commission number entered as a chassis number? I assume the factory were still using Commission numbers when building. Appias?

I am getting close(r) day by day to putting 1819AW, an early 4th Series B20 back on the road and will encounter this same problem as I only have the RF60 green Registration Book. most recently dated 1967 .
I also have an old MOT for the car from 1972 which is when I believe it was last on the road.
It is a 'matching numbers' car according to factory records and when I contacted the DVLA 3 years ago to enquire about putting it on a SORN, they said not to bother as the Registration Mark had not been re-allocated and this was extremely unlikely to happen going forward.
So, who is the person to contact to see if the vehicle features in Club Records and any other advice would be gratefully received.

Hi Chris,

I've had a look through the Club Registers of Members back to 1969 and can't find 1819 AW listed. However, not all cars are listed by members and some that are don't record registration numbers.

Might be worth trying the club librarian Chris Hopkins to see if he has anything relevant. Maybe a a register pre my 69 one.

As I said in an earlier post, when I approach the DVLA ten years ago they found that the original registration number for my Dilambda (ERF 294) had not been re-allocated and promptly assigned it to the car.

Good luck.

Chris, you should not have a problem re-registering your car, as long as the chassis number on the old log book and the one on the car match, all you will need to do is have the car inspected by a club official so that you can be issued a dating letter confirming its identity and the process should be straightforward.
James, I fear that if you do not have any old paperwork for your car that matches what the DVLA have or something that can confirm that the chassis number that is on the car matches the registration number, you will not be issued the number that is on the car but will have to accept a period plate. Proof of identity is the key!

a little more progress , the LMC have found the previous keepers details on their database including his new contact details, I made contact (very helpful gentleman) , I had a visit from an LMC member to confirm that the car was genuine including a letter from him to DVLA stating that the car is not a bitzer , spoke to the contact in DVLA who has told me with the statement from the previous keeper and the LMC that's enough evidence for them to issue me the cars v5 , fingers crossed its all going in the post this morning so hopefully it will be on the road very soon , once again I cannot thank the LMC members enough for their help  Smiley

Hi James

A full result, congratulations, also glad to hear that the DVLA can be sensible with these situations and also shows the position of the official car clubs status as being important, especially of there are historical records as well.

this is whats been sent with a verification letter from the LMC , to be fair the lady I dealt with in DVLA was incredibly helpful and I will hang onto her details for any future problems with other cars

I was recently contacted by James Parry through the Lancia Motor Club about a vehicle that I sold to him in 2006. He has asked me to confirm to you that the vehicle is a Lancia Appia registration number TXT 23. I had bought the car in approximately 1976 and ran it for a while before laying it up pending restoration work. I still have a tax disc issued by the Greater London Council for 4 months expiring October 1976 for Lancia TXT 23.

My address at the time was *********************, and throughout the following 30 years it remained registered as TXT 23 but was unused and kept off the road. Mr Parry has sent me recent photos of the vehicle and I can confirm that it is the car I sold to him in 2006.

Somewhere, I have a folder containing the all the relevant documents but despite thorough searches while moving house in 2006 and subsequently I have been unable to find the folder. I am quite surprised that I have bee unable to track it down and am beginning to think that it might have been permanently lost or accidentally destroyed. At the time I sold the car I felt confident that the folder would eventually be found.

I sincerely hope that Mr Parry can be issued with the requisite documentation enabling him to licence the vehicle for use on the road again. For my part I can vouch for the fact that it was legitimately registered and licenced with the authorities at Swansea as TXT 23. I can only guess as to how any discrepancy occurred but perhaps an error occurred in transposing some of the details which nobody spotted at the time.

For your information my current address is *****************
