I had a similar problem with my Lambda, having to Helicoil a few stud holes. I had to hire a magnetic drill in order to be sure the threads were straight. I subsequently found adverts on the Internet for such drills, not a lot more expensive than the cost of hiring one. If I ever have to do a similar job, I'll buy a magnetic drill. By the way, I would not even consider running the engine before putting the stud in properly.

I'd sort it now if you can because if my experience is anything to go by you'll have no Lancia time for ages after you have moved house. Like John I'd not run it until the stud is sorted as you might ruin the gasket or have some other nasty. Mike

Thanks for the wise words... I was going to offer the damn thing to a local fisherman as an anchor for his boat but I've calmed down and ordered a helicoil kit so will be back on the tools over the weekend...agree about no Lancia time after the move so will try and get the little beast up and running before it goes on the back of a trailer. Being positive it is better the problem happened now and better than when the engine was back in the car. Clarkey

Hi all The head is off and the stud out it had stripped the nut as well as coming lose... the lack of thread in the tapped hole in the block is the reason it screwed so far in and caused the problems see picture Clarkey

Not sure a helicoil will solve this but a "time sert" possibly could, and "big sert" ( http://www.timesert.com/html/bigsert.html) probably would be required. What is the thread? Wurth do a variety of Timesert kits.

I have not tried myself to helicoil an Appia head but I don't see why not. This kind of repair can be done to Lancia alloy components. On the other hand, running with a slack fastener may warp the cylinder head and produce leakage problems. Andrea

Andrea, I was looking at the top c10mm of the hole where no thread is apparent as it seems to have been abused in the past. I am surprised the engine shop did not spot this.....Tim

I must confess I have given up at the moment as we are moving house so the little beast is being trailered back up North to a more spacious and slightly warmer workshop. in the meantime I managed to revisit the 'Parallel project' as it needed to be moved to allow the sulking Appia in! Clarkey

The previous project a Flavia Coupe took ten years surviving 2 divorces, a career change and about half a dozen moves. Clarkey

Could you permit yourself a donor engine to get the show on the road and deal with the recalcitrant unit over a longer period? Or is that cheating?
