Appia S1 - 2006 Turin centenary Car of the Century

Look what my son's done to my favourite non-Appia (hooligan car with 6 speed box, Konis, lowered springs, smeghead exhaust, etc.).

Luckily it can be fixed fairly easily (the car he rear-ended wasn't even damaged!), and I have been fortunate enough to find one near here with a blown engine that has all the broken bits that I need, plus a few for the other Ypsi, so we dodged a bullet there (I had just spent over 1000 on the car getting the cambelt, cambelt bearings, water pump, brakes, etc., done, in preparation for exporting it to France, so I didn't want to have to scrap it!).

So not a happy bunny. Mind you, we all have to have a prang at some point, so I suppose I ought to be glad that this was only a minor one...

When I did something similar with my rosso the insurance bill was nearly 4k so just as well you can do it yourself.

Yes, I was surprised at how many bits inside the bumper and grille were bent - the slam panel and bar inside the bumper were both well knackered, and the front had to be jigged to get them right, even though the damage looks minimal and there is no external panel damage. Luckily the scrapper I have bought has got all those, plus lights, grille, etc., and a rad (the rad was punctured but not badly). I'd have been distraught if I had had to write the car off, because I absolutely love it and it is the nicest (modern) car I have ever driven, by a country mile! I'm not doing the work myself though - no premises to do it in now, and there is the small matter of it being in one country and me being in another (I was just about to bring it to France when this happened). However, I have a very friendly and cheap bloke in Exeter who is doing the job for me, but it will still cost getting on for a grand, even with me sourcing the parts and bringing them.

Like you I was amazed at the damage, I know cars are meant to crumple in an accident but ! it all did it's job as we weren't injured,The damage we had was the front bumper, grille, bonnet, o/s front wing that had actually slid backwards and stopped the door opening, the Rad, air conditioning, inner wing, o/s headlamp, both of the seat belt tensioners had gone off although the airbags hadn't,
The Fiat Dealership in Bedford had so much problem getting the  headlamp, Grille and belt tensioners that I put them in touch with Van Dijk's in Rotterdam where she came from, and they supplied them Roll Eyes
I'd also agree with your driving experiences as well, I loved it, it was only a bad accident that meant I couldn't use my right arm for the foreseeable future, that led to me selling her as it's very hard to change gear in a LHD car without the use of your right arm.

Is this an appropriate time to confessing that at the age of 20 I spread my father's six month old Mercedes 450 SE upside down up a ditch......

We were all kids once and some of us are "kinesthetic learners" (I think that means we don't learn unless we mess up BIG time).

...... in the Tait family it goes like this ....

three  sons in a Beta 2000 berlina, about 1.30am on the dual carriageway A13 in Essex, all asleep, which unfortunately included the driver. He woke up to find the car heading for the central reserve barrier. Overcorrected, spun the car off the road, through a tree (fortunately sapling) barrier on the verge, hit an embankment and rolled the car onto its side. All three stepped out through where the windscreen should have been totally unhurt ... not a bruise, graze or scratch between them, unbelievable!!!! The car, of course, was a write-off.

I thought that was it for my wife with a car for them, but astoundingly she said, well if they came out of that  unhurt it cannot be a bad car, you had better get another one ...... so I did!!!!

in 2006 I borrowed my ex girlfriends cinquecento , lowered, spax nice wheels etc, very nice tidy car , unfortunately they are very "gokart" like but can also spin like a top at high speed on cow muck , end result , 3 broken ribs and a shattered pride , my fault for behaving like a 17yr old but thankful how strong these little Italian cars are  Roll Eyes

My son was lucky to get out of this one. You can see how the offside front wheel ended up in the driver's footwell; it is lucky that the Y10 has no centre consol!  Shame about the lovely Y10 though.

Health and safety often quite rightly, gets a bad press, but most of the time it does get it right. We all owe a debt to Ralph Nader, even if belatedly and rather grudgingly!!

That is horrific......luck is not the word....he must have a host of guardian angels!

Two guys I know have both had serious injuries recently, one stepping off a pavement ....ended up with two plates and 8 screws in his ankle, the 2nd operating heavy machinery, shattered wrist and forearm, plates and screws too.

No business/profit is worth any thing other a few blisters and the odd paper cut!!!!

Sorry - had no internet all week (in Turin picking up new Appia!), and came back to see this. My son is forgiven - this is the most amazing crash. As you say, lucky to get out alive!
