That sounds a bit like the issue there is with the Saab diesel I have (though never experienced it personally), where there is a sensor (EGR?) which gets fouled up with short journeys when the engine is not used 'enthusiastically' over a prolonged period. Remedy is 10-20 min blast down the lanes to get nice and hot etc, soon cleans it off apparently.
